Meet Brittany Rolstad of BRITTANYJIN in Orange County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Rolstad.

Brittany, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am an artist of Korean and Caucasian descent with an absolute love of anything deemed “cute.” I’ve lived in California my entire life, born in Long Beach and raised in the Bay Area, to currently residing in Orange County. Like a majority of artists, I started to focus on art at a young age. Always drawing, even when teachers would mark down my assignments because I’d drawn in the margins of them. This only continued through high school, where I had even taken summer courses to allow my school schedule the ability to fit in as many art classes as willing. Having now graduated from art school, I am still discovering myself as an artist. I focus on creating work both traditionally and digitally with an emphasis on women. I tend to marry the cute color palettes seen in Asian pop art with American Pin-ups. I strive to be a female artist who creates works emphasizing women in a generally sexy and feminine manner without overtly sexualizing them. Creating sweet and stylized pin-ups generally for women.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course, no one really has a completely smooth journey. I’ve struggled with depression, anxiety, and an overwhelming sense of being unfit to be an artist. College for me, was a very long experience in which I jumped between majors, struggled with my artistic identity, and experienced the loss of a loved one. Though just a small handful of examples, I do overall feel that every struggle really does help you to grow. No matter how cliche that idea is. Now I’ve found myself living in a very unprecedented time in which there are so many opportunities for artists and yet so very few. Navigating the professional world during a global pandemic has been incredibly difficult. It’s going to be very interesting to see where we all go from here.

BRITTANYJIN – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
For years I’d been talking about creating a brand but I had never actually taken the steps to do so. I started BRITTANYJIN in November of 2019 and have created only a handful of products thus far. I am very excited to see how she grows and for all the ideas I have to come to fruition.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I feel that I will be successful when I can create my own mark as an artist. A mark, whether small or large, of some sort in which someone out in the world knows I am an artist and appreciates my work. This is something I’ve begun to feel a little bit of through my store but I hope to one day have an overwhelming sense of.
