Meet Brie Paige Mattioli of Butterfly Beats: Music Therapy & Holistic Healing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brie Paige Mattioli.

Brie Paige, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hello my name is Brie Paige Mattioli, MT-BC. I am a Board Certified Music Therapist, Professional Vocalist, Singer-Songwriter, Performing and Recording Artist, Yoga Instructor, and Reiki/ Sound Healer. I’ve lived in California for almost two and a half years now and am originally from northern NJ. I am very excited to share with VoyageLA my story and my passion for music therapy, which has cultivated my private practice, “Butterfly Beats: Music Therapy & Holistic Healing”

I have wanted to be a Music Therapist since I was 10-years-old. Singing has always been my sanctuary and I have sincere gratitude for it being my mecca for self-expression. When I was 10, I experienced a devastating loss. My older sister Nicole had been diagnosed with a very rare bone cancer and lost her battle after fighting for two years. She was 12-years-old when she passed. Throughout her life and even during her treatment she always persevered with the same brilliant smile and absolute joy. During her treatment, she had worked with a Music Therapist who helped her write a song, which Nicole proudly titled, “Life Is A Celebration.” Ever since witnessing this experience, I’ve known how transformative of an effect music therapy has, and I’ve been determined to live my life in honor of her beautiful memory, as well as seeking my own personal beauty of living a meaningful life along the way.

Vocally, I started off by learning by ear and being a songbird since an early age. I grew up in an artsy household and we were always encouraged to sing, dance, laugh, and dream big. I eventually transitioned from singing opera to growing into a passion for singing jazz, folk, soul, and indie/ alternative music, in addition to songwriting. I attended Berklee College of Music and graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in Music Therapy, with a Psychology minor. After Berklee, I was selected to be The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s (CHOP’s) first music therapy intern allowed to work in their Neonatal/ Infant Intensive Care Unit (N/IICU). My sister had been treated at CHOP, and it was a great honor to challenge myself to be back in that environment, but on the other side of the field, as a compassionate clinician in training.

I am very grateful for the amazing training and support I received from CHOP. Building confidence at this site allowed me to feel powerful to accept my dream job (working in a top 10 children’s hospital), across the country at The Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC Children’s). At CHOC, I founded their Neonatal Infant Care and Small Baby Unit Music Therapy program, as well as covered over 7 units in the hospital, specializing in pediatric intensive care, cardiac, medical surgical, oncology, palliative care, hospice, and mental health populations. I’m honored and proud by all I was able to accomplish at CHOC, and recently decided to take the exciting leap into private practice, creating “Butterfly Beats: Music Therapy & Holistic Healing” to reach a broader spectrum of the community.

At this point in my career, I’ve become a nationally published author both in prestigious industry journals, as well as in media format. Public speaking engagements give me the platform to share and educate various communities on the amazing, clinically-proven benefits of music therapy. Music Therapy is still a very niche field, and I feel extremely passionate to be a leading advocate for it, both as a creative arts therapist, as well as an artist who presents frequently on how evidence-based and powerful this healing modality is. I’ve additionally presented at numerous national conferences, CEO round table events, founded my own NICU music therapy program, my own private practice, and anticipate releasing my own music EP in January 2020 (called “Free The Bull”).

I truly believe my voice is my gift to share, and my sister, who has been my angel for now over 15 years, I believe smiles upon me daily. Music is a beautifully intrinsic form of medicine; one that we begin entraining to since the womb. I feel honored to be able to share it in such a powerful, transformative, healing way. This is what drives the passion for “Butterfly Beats” and my own personal story.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a challenging road since the start. It seems that all great passions grow that way. I think of life as a pattern of waves, driven by vibrations and energy. Rhythm is what I always speak of when referring to the efficacy of how Music Therapy works. After all, we begin hearing as early as 16-weeks gestation (in the womb). The first sounds we hear in life are the ocean-like whooshing sound of the intrauterine lining and our mother’s heartbeat. I feel like my life has been this exact pattern of great waves. The higher some of them are, the harder the drops can be. I appreciate that I am driven to continue to seek greater meaning in life and live compassionately while sharing my gifts. There truly is so much we can’t control in life, and I’ve experienced my fair share of personal trauma, loss, and disappointment. I still try to live with my angel’s wisdom instilled in me, and when I help my clients and share my voice, I feel this tremendous, authentic power of healing and joy. And when I write my songs, many stemmed from processing pain, I find that I can finally release those emotions. That’s the beauty and challenge of having an artsy soul and sensitivity for life. Yes, it’s high risk, but the rewards of creating positive change and giving hope is priceless.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Butterfly Beats: Music Therapy & Holistic Healing story. Tell us more about the business.
My company is “Butterfly Beats: Music Therapy & Holistic Healing.” I provide Music Therapy, Customized Songwriting, Live Music Meditations, Reiki Healing, Yoga and Workshops/ Presentations throughout the LA/OC area and remotely across the country, as well as actively booking public speaking events, private and group sessions. One of my favorite abilities as a Music Therapist is to decrease the heart rates of my clients with my voice and guitar, using a technique called “rhythmic entrainment.” This helps lower their anxiety, depression, and increase their abilities to find a harmonious homeostasis for their body to heal and rest at. I also sincerely love using the technique of songwriting to help my clients release repressed emotions and increase their confidence to self-express through a creative medium. Butterfly Beat’s mission statement is: “Butterfly Beats is built from the passion to spread joy and healing to all through the creative medium of music. Music is an extremely powerful, clinically-proven healing modality. Science has proven music to be an incredible tool for learning, recovery, and discovery. Music is not isolated to one part of our brains – it activates a vast range of the neuronetwork, creating stronger neuropathways and more depth to our mind-body connection. With the use of Music Therapy combined with other holistic healing modalities, such as Reiki, Sound Baths, and Yoga; Butterfly Beats has created a unique treatment plan to experience relief from pain, empowerment for self-expression, lasting benefits of recovery, coping mechanisms to take charge of your wellness, and a proven increase in overall quality of life. For all ages, from pre-natal to end-of-life, Butterfly Beats is here for YOU & your LOVED ones. Healing mind – body – soul.” Please visit “Butterfly Beats” website to find out more about booking these services as well as music therapy research.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m not sure if I believe in luck. I believe in good karma and shared karma. I also wouldn’t necessarily consider myself “lucky” at all, but I would say I am resilient and determined. I am grateful for that, and for my relentless passion to continue moving forward and sharing my voice. Changing lives with music therapy is a transformative power that I am grateful to cultivate. My vision to positively impact as many people as possible through “Butterfly Beats Music Therapy” is what inspires me to live a life worth meaning, truly celebrating the potential we have for self-healing every single day.
