Meet Brianna Releford of Faint Essence Candle Co. in Van Nuys

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brianna Releford.

Brianna, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My partner Khalia Ervin and I decided to start the candle business along with our other brand Sankofa Athletic Apparel on January 1st, 2019, New Year’s Day. We immediately began the process with taking care of all of the legalities first. Once all of our paperwork was finished, it was time for candle testing. We purchased our first beginner’s candle making kit immediately and didn’t have much success in the beginning. We found a candle making class online and it made things so much easier to try again. We started out with 1 wax pitcher and four fragrances that we felt people would be able to connect with.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We have had many issues along the way, for instance, the most important struggle has been making the actual candle smell like the fragrance used when lit. There is much chemistry in formulating great smelling candles such as wick size, types of wax and fragrance oil amounts. We are determined in giving our customers quality products and this is a process that we will not skip or rush no matter how long it may take.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Faint Essence is a candle brand that provides great smelling hand-poured candles made with love; made for love! We decided to make our candles with 100% soy wax and cotton wicks to ensure our candles are safe to burn while children, the elderly and pets are present. We put great thought into the names of our candles so that the people would be able to connect the fragrance to the name. We chose to place thoughtful affirmations under each lid of our candles to promote self-love and positive self-talk, intentions and mindfulness. We believe that the way that you speak to yourself sets your path for how you deal with the world and daily struggles.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as making people happy with themselves and living off of the love and skill that was embedded in me to give to others. Success isn’t a margin, a number or goal it is simply to give myself in only a way that I know, and that is love.
