Meet Briana Hurley of Beauty by Briana in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Briana Hurley.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Briana. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I always knew that I wanted to become a makeup artist. Before YouTube tutorials I would sit in my room with Kevyn Aucoin’s iconic “Making Faces” book and practice his how-to’s. About six years ago, I began my career in makeup, and completed the masters program at the Make Up For Ever Academy NYC at the top of my class. After finishing the intensive training about three years ago, I moved out to Los Angeles. I am originally from California and saw Los Angeles as a place of great opportunity for furthering my career as a makeup artist.

I began freelancing in LA, mostly focusing on bridal makeup and event makeup. With all the events and parties in Los Angeles, it’s not hard to stay busy. But I really found my calling when I found semi-permanent makeup. One of the things I have always loved about makeup is the ability to change someone’s look with simple techniques designed to enhance features.

Eyebrows are an extremely important feature that can really define someone’s style, and make a huge impact on the finished look. I decided to expand my skillset and became certified in microblading (a natural looking brow tattoo technique) at Elite Permanent Makeup.

After my certification, I went on to open my own microblading studio in West Hollywood.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I understand starting a business requires 100% commitment. The government regulations posed obstacles which had to be overcome and were quite challenging. As microblading is a newer technique, the permit process was very stringent with the health department requirements. Marketing and referrals have been the greatest challenge, as building a clientele and referral basis takes time.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Beauty by Briana – what should we know?
As previously mentioned, I am a makeup artist who specializes in bridal makeup, event makeup, and microblading. I am also a professional airbrush artist. I provide my services at the client’s convenience by working at the location of their choosing, such as hotels, homes, offices, etc.

My salon in West Hollywood is used exclusively for semi-permanent makeup. The technique I specialize in, called microblading, is a semi-permanent tattoo created with strokes to mimic real hair. The result is a very natural looking brow that will last up to a year.

My skillset as a makeup artist and a body art practitioner set me apart from others for a few reasons. I have always been a visual artist and have a deep understanding of color theory, shape, and have an extremely steady hand along with an eye for detail. For me, there is no better feeling than transforming my client into their most beautiful self.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My mom and my sister have been my biggest supporters throughout my career. My sister deserves a medal for the many disastrous makeup looks inflicted on her before I was old enough to take professional level courses. But she never stopped encouraging me to keep practicing and get better. My mother has been my main support in starting my microblading career; she has been running her own business for years and is a constant hub of information on how to further my business.

  • Microblading – $500 – includes first application & touchup
  • Makeup Application – $95-$125 depending on service (basic makeup/lashes/airbrush)
