Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Neunaber.
Brian, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was 18 years old when I connected my interests in guitar, audio, math and science to make it my mission to pursue a career in music electronics. While at university, I went out of my way to learn as much as I could about audio processing and ultimately earned Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Electrical Engineering.
After 15 years of designing audio electronics for other companies, I wanted to design my own products and build something of my own. I became keenly aware of and interested in the rise in popularity of the stompbox and “boutique” guitar pedals. I felt that I had something unique to offer, and guitar pedals were an ideal fit given my background.
I hand-built my first 20 guitar pedals and put them on eBay. They sold, and customers wanted more. After the doubling of sales year-on-year for three years in a row, I was making more from this side gig than my day job. So, in 2012, I started to pursue my business full time.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many struggles. The largest is simply having enough time and resources to do everything that needs to be done and finding people whom I can rely on. I am lucky that my team members are such people, but there is always more to be done.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Neunaber Audio – what should we know?
Neunaber Audio makes audio effects for musicians. Many of these are stompbox-type effects used by guitarists, but musicians of all types use our products.
We are best known for our reverberation products, including the Wet Reverb pedal and Immerse Reverberator Mk II. I am most proud of our Wet Reverberator software plugin for digital audio workstations, which is our best-sounding reverberation algorithm.
What sets us apart is our use of digital technology to produce stellar sound quality at an affordable price. “Digital” has a negative connotation among many audio purists, and we strive to change this perception.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My multi-disciplinary approach to design. Most product design companies have a team of experts, each with his or her own silo of skills. I have spent years in all areas of product design — hardware, software, firmware, audio processing and algorithm design, and so on. I think this allows me to achieve a greater level of efficiency with my designs, which translates to better value for the customer.
