Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Lau.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Brian. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started shooting images since I was 13 years old, I found photography through my school’s photography club. Back then, I was a shy and introverted individual that found it hard to convey my thoughts to my peers. Photography then became a medium for me to express myself and how I saw my surroundings.
Over the course of the next ten years, I took on photography as more of a hobby that I wanted to get better at. When things get rough in life, I turned to creating images because that’s where I felt true joy. Being able to express my thoughts in a creative outlet was something that I wanted to keep in my life.
I was working as a residential concierge one day at a local hotel residences and my manager came up to me, he offered me the opportunity to shoot a feature of the staff at the residences. I said yes and through the process of shooting, I’ve come to the realization that photography was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
The next day, I gave my manager my resignation letter and quit. I spend the next six months mapping out my new plans to pursue this career full time. I interned locally at a wedding photography studio before deciding to buy a one-way ticket (in 2018) to Los Angeles to chase after this happiness of mine and I have never looked back since.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Uprooting your life from one country to another was never gonna be a smooth ride. Everything was new from getting my own place to establishing new contacts to diving headfirst into the L.A lifestyle.
It was hard, I was from a small country in Singapore and I never realized how much I took for granted till I had to do it for myself. I was blessed to have a distant relative that was living in L.A that guide me for a couple of the necessities but it was not his responsibility to make sure I was okay, I had to find my own path and walk on my own.
Having one contact in my phone book really pushed me into an existential crisis, I was questioning everything. I had doubts about what I am trying to achieve, I had doubts about fitting into this new world. It really got me into a dark space which led to the creation of this ongoing photo series I did called “Voyager”.
In the series, I captured these popular urban landscapes around L.A, the city of stars at sunrise. These normally populated spaces were void of any humans. I was very lonely at that point and channeling my thoughts and energy into this project really reminded me why I came to L.A in the first place. It was therapy. It is what I love.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Still.BrianPhotography story. Tell us more about it.
Still.BrianPhotography was founded in 2018, it is a commercial photography company with a single employee, me.
I focus mostly on portraitures and the wide array it brings from fashion images to lifestyle images to even film stills.
What I try to capture in my images are the moments in time. As a photographer, you have to have a basic understanding of the technical elements of a shoot ( i.e lighting, composition and creating the look that your client wants ). What I want to capture and what my clients book me for are the moments in between static poses and contrived model expressions.
This feeling of “Authenticity” is what sets me apart from others and I am proud to be known for that because from the beginning, photography was a means for me to express how I saw the world around me.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I truly am always appreciative of everything that I have achieved so far. I like to look at the glass half-filled.
Things have not been easy both professionally and personally but I have met amazing people through this journey that have stepped in when things get rough.
I don’t know if I would be able to get this far without their support. I always believe that the universe have a plan for everyone and it sends you the things/people you need when you need it.
When I was starting out with this business, I had many friends that came to my aid and introduced me to what is essentially now my clients so for that I am thankful.
I think it is all a part of the universe’s plan for me so I welcome whatever life brings on next.
