Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Fort.
Brian, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
One night a small group of friends went to the strip club. One of us was going to the Navy right out of high school. At this stage it is 1997, I thought I was gonna be a writer. I was loving wordplay, and so did my best friend. On the way home we kept saying, “Yo those girls had DaGoods, like boom!” The mood was still, and only the car was moving, I said, “wouldn’t it be dope if they came out in a shirt that said DaGoods across the front of it?” I think our heads exploded because we looked at each other and started blurting out “Yeah on beanies too, and hoodies”, We were imagining how seeing a cute girl in clothing that was obviously meant to be self-referential would make people feel. We thought people would want her confidence even if they were not model attractive. Everyone has DaGoods in some form, I mean even a villain’s mamma loves them for some reason, because to her that villain still has some good in him and she sees it. We believe that about all people as well. It is that mentality that has brought me to you. Blessings
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road was not smooth at all. There are milestones that you strive for, and celebrate when you reach them. My journey is filled roadblocks some are self-imposed, others are there for learning. For instance, I do a lot of ‘business’ on my own I do not have a “team” so to speak. I have my go-to’s such as my wife she is an entrepreneur as well. My brothers point me in the right direction at times. Having a “team” of people that you trust, and share the same vision as you is a gift from the universe and God should be praised because of it. Plus I have no “business training”, I am an artist, painter, and Illustrator it wasn’t until I wanted to get paid for my art that I figured that I don’t know that much about doing business. So, I learn as much as I can about my next move before I make it. Soon I’ll be thinking of moves years in advance, and even then the road will not be smooth. If it were easy everyone would do it.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the DaGoods Clothing Co. story. Tell us more about the business.
I am selling self-esteem. I am selling empowerment. For those that believe in the message that “everyone has DaGoods” in exchange you get a shirt or a hat that says so. People think I’m just selling you a shirt, but the shirt is just a vehicle that people can use to express that they have da//gudz [plural] n. being made of the material that satisfy human wants. What I’m known for is the quality of my designs, I am artist first and I feel that the original pieces I have made for the brand helps sets me apart from the pack. My passion for people to be their best selves comes across when you talk to me, and creating that genuine connection with people that is what set’s me apart from others.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
No such thing as luck. I have either put myself in the right place at the right time, or I didn’t. I was either prepared or I wasn’t.
