Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Carter.
Brian, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was originally working as a salesperson in an electrical engineering role with an electric supplier. I started practicing with photography during the last 6 months I worked there.
I received a raise and a promotion at my job and was laid off 2 weeks later.
Disillusioned with working for anyone other than myself I decided to try running my own photography business. Being a hopeless romantic and liking the idea of shooting big, important moments, weddings were a natural fit.
My personality/temperament is fairly unwavering, another plus when working on a day where emotions are heightened and level heads are quite useful 🙂
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No road to running your own business is totally smooth. When starting, you need to wear many hats. Just because your passionate about photography doesn’t mean you like website design, putting together legal contracts, etc.
It was important to me to focus on the areas I was most passionate about and then as the business grew, I was able to outsource the elements I didn’t fully enjoy.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Pixel That! Photography – what should we know?
We are a down to earth, luxury photography studio. We bring the highest level of skill and knowledge to our clients and leave egos at the door, and we have fun doing it!
We feel our imagery speaks for itself, but what we are most proud of is how we treat our clients and make them feel when working together.
Our approach is unique – Rather than take our skills and knowledge and apply it to every wedding unilaterally, we talk with our clients to discover what speaks to them. For instance, a conversation with a bride and groom will take place separately and we discover what their love languages are for each other, what they’re most looking forward to, and what their vision is for their wedding day. This is where we conceptualize the types of images we will capture. With this in mind we will facilitate interactions that allow our clients to act naturally, communicate, love and enjoy each other. THIS is what we capture. It makes each photographic experience unique because the concepts are inspired by our clients and only then do we get to be creative and apply our art.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
When I told my family that this was the direction I was headed, my parents bought me my first truly professional camera. It was amazing, both as a tool and as a vote of confidence that this is something I could be successful pursuing.
When the business started truly gaining attraction, I bought them a huge TV as a thank-you 😉
