Meet Brentwood Hairstylist: Kristi Hesselberg

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristi Hesselberg.

She’s one of the most positive, optimistic, happy go lucky stylists we’ve met so far.  Her positive attitude is contagious and we can’t help but root for her and her success.  She’s talented, humbled, down to earth and we couldn’t be more proud to share her story with you below.

Kristi, please share your story with us.  How did you get to where you are today?

I started doing hair and makeup as a teenager. I did many updos on myself and members of my high school dance team and also for friends before school dances. I went to beauty school in Wisconsin and completed a professional makeup artistry course in Los Angeles. I built a clientele for two years in West LA before opening up a private studio with my partner. I’ve been in the industry over 5 years and am always learning new trends and techniques. I love attending color classes and go to many different classes or hair shows each year.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a pretty great ride with few bumps in the road. I’ve worked in 2 salons that closed down, but like they say when one door closes another opens. Sometimes you need that little push to do great things. My last salon closed down so my partner and I decided to go on our own and it’s been an amazing experience!

What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future are getting married in August to my loving fiancé and partner of over 8 years. I plan to work hard and focus on my goals of growing a larger clientele and moving into a double studio with my partner or having studio of my own in a year. I want to be able to be fully booked a couple weeks in advance working 40 hours a week, and be able to travel the world with my soon to be husband.

Let’s dig a little deeper into your story.  What was the hardest time you’ve had?

I have had a couple struggling times in my career. I’ve worked in Florida and California and it’s also hard to start over. For hairstylists when we move far distances we literally start right back at the bottom. Both states I’ve worked in salons that have closed down and gave us less than 2 weeks’ notice which can be very scary! My last salon started out as a great job, I worked with amazing and talented people but the last 6-8 months was the worst experience I’ve ever had. I would prefer not to go into detail about what all happened, but all of us were so miserable by the end that when we finally found out we were closing we were pretty relieved. But like they say when one door closes another opens and I looked into a bunch of options for the next step for me to take.

Do you ever just stop and think WOW – I’ve made it?

When my partner and I opened the studio that was my first ah ha moment of I’m finally starting to get where I want to be. I don’t feel I have totally made it where I want to be but with a little hard work and determination I know I will get there!
