Meet Brenda Magana of Mi Kasa Vegana in Ontario

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenda Magana.

Brenda, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Mi Kasa Vegana was officially introduced to the public last year in February. I saw an opportunity close to home for a pop up after much hesitation I stepped foot into the pop-up world with a small table, tablecloth, picture frame and apparel. Since I hesitated for so long the opportunity to showcase my food was gone as spots filled quickly! I decided to at least get my name out there and do apparel. I wanted to do apparel later along the way, but I did not mind one bit. I was grateful and equally nervous for the opportunity that I am so eternally grateful I took. At first, I shared a lot of my cooking and baked goods on my personal page, and people would always tell me how good it looked and that I should open up my own business, that made me wonder. I shared my cooking and baking with my co-workers and close friends from time to time, they were shocked that there was no animal products in it whatsoever.

They would always tell me I needed to sell my stuff because it was that good! Coming from nonplant based eaters that meant the world to me, but I was always afraid to take that step. I didn’t want to “fail” and I didn’t feel like I really had what it took to do it, although I always wondered what it would be like to have other people enjoy my food and that thought always brought happiness. Close friends started ordering cupcakes, posting abut them and I was getting orders here and there. After much encouragement from my partner Jon, family and friends I decided to just go for it, and leave all my doubts behind. If you really love something don’t wait the best time is now! Today I absolutely love, and enjoy what I do!

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but I wouldn’t have it any other way! Having my Mon-Fri 8-5 while trying to run Mi Kasa Vegana sometimes on no sleep gets a bit challenging, I am very limited on time and the things that I am able to accomplish, and the pop ups that I am able to participate in. I continue to learn daily, I take those challenges and turn them into lessons. I’ve gotten better at prepping and managing time to be more efficient. One woman operation could be challenging but not impossible!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mi Kasa Vegana – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Mi Kasa Vegana does baking, cooking and apparel. At the moment I specialize in cupcakes and have expanded into cakes. More food and baked goods will be added in the near future! I am known for my Puro Churro Pari cake/cupcakes and my Hostess With The Mostess cupcake. I am proud of the quality of baking and food that I serve. I am proud of operating and running a plant-based business as a Latina Woman with no culinary or business background, just a girl cooking with love trying to show you that cruelty food is delicious and there is nothing to “miss.” What sets me apart from others is the creativity and flavors that go into my cupcakes! I like giving people the “wow factor” both in presentation and flavor. And I am one of the very few plant-based bakers here in the I.E.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The thing I like best about the city is the community, and support! I also like how many businesses have been adding vegan-friendly options to their menu. The thing I like the least is that there isn’t many vegan options around, but it is growing little by little so that makes me very happy!

  • Cupcakes $4ea (except specialty cupcakes)
  • Dozen avg. $40
  • Cakes vary upon servings and design. Some start at $35
  • Tropi Nachos $8
