Meet Brenda Banda

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenda Banda.

Brenda, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my career at the age of 17, at San Fernando High School. One day I asked my Spanish A.P. teacher to produce a short play we were reading and he said, “you produce it. I’ll support you.” And that was the first time I produced, directed and acted in my own project. I co-founded my own theatre company in 2010 (Urban Theatre Movement). With UTM, we’ve produced many knock out productions that I’m really proud of. UTM gave me many beautiful and challenging experiences. I even directed a play in Central Park NYC for their Summer Stage 2014! And now, I’m excited to have a recurring role on the much anticipated Gentefied on Netflix. It airs Feb 21st! I also am producing my own health n fitness talk show on IGTV called Fit for a Queen @fitfor_aqueen. It’s been a long, challenging road but it’s looking very bright and I ain’t mad at that. Haha.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, being head of a company as a women has been a major challenge at times. I’ve seen first hand the subtle and blatant sexism that men and women exude so effortlessly. I’ve learned to rise above it. Having positions of power has taught me to not be afraid to be disliked. I always have to repeat to myself, “you have a job to do, do it well.” But I would have to say the most challenging of all has been my own self-doubts and self-sabotage. I have had to work HARD on this. I have had to learn to be kind to myself and stay positive but also I have learned to be honest with myself on what I need to improve on to succeed and make it to my next “level”. I feel like the biggest challenges in life are always inside our heads.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Well, I am an actress. I’ve done theatre mostly. I have been doing theatre for about 23 years. It has literally saved my life. I am actually writing a book on that. Theatre is a gateway drug to self-healing! Anyway, right now I am most proud of the work we all did as a family on Gentefied! I can’t wait to see it! And I can’t wait for all of you to see it.

I don’t know what “sets me apart”. I don’t think that’s up to me to decide. I will say, I have very strong faith in myself and in all of divinity. I will say, I believe we all have gifts to share with the world and a purpose to add to the evolution of mankind. My wish is that we all tap into that and move in that direction. What a wonderful shift that would be for all humankind I think. An inner knowing of purpose and divinity.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I’m gonna sound like a broken record but landing this role on Gentefied. Also, directing in Central Park was rad AF. I fell in Love with New York.
