Meet Bree Lauren of Lekūna Intimate

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bree Lauren.

Bree, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After studying aviation in college and realizing that was not a path I wanted for a career, I tapped deeply into myself, my femininity and became immersed in holistic teachings and lifestyle. I traveled and studied yoga, herbalism, massage, nutrition and birth advocacy. During this time, I also tapped into the well of creativity that was flowing in my early 20’s. Since I was a little one under my grandmother’s wing, I had a passion for sewing and making my own things. While living in Guatemala, I had the opportunity to assist a clothing designer there and learn the art of natural dyeing, design, production and running a clothing business. After this experience, I knew I wanted to create my own line eventually. I spent some years working as a doula, prenatal yoga teacher and coaching women on reproductive health and reclamation and finally landed myself in a position to dive into craft and merge all of my passions into a product.

I recently re-branded, so some may know my brand as the former name Madre Mudra, which is known for the signature design; Secret Garden Panties – panties that come with a heatable herbal pouch to put in the front pocket for soothing comfort (learn more on the website!) That’s where Madre Mudra, and essentially Lekūna started. The Secret Garden Panties were a vision I brought to life weaving my love for healing, herbalism, reproductive reclamation, natural dyeing, design and craft. Fast forward to now, three years later, I have six designs that make up the organic and naturally dyed basic intimates collection that is expanding with bed and bath goods as well.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As I get wiser, I learn that not many tasks in life come without challenges, how one handles those challenges is what determines a smooth road or not. When I started my business, I was balancing an international partnership that planted me between California and Australia and some places in between. During that time, I was the sole producer; cutting, dyeing, sewing, packaging, shipping – so as you can imagine, you have to be somewhat still to handle those tasks. I would crush out my production for a couple of months, then travel to be with my partner, sometimes packing an extra suitcase to do my production in remote locations. This was obviously not ideal or a steady business model.

Once that partnership came to a close and I landed permanently back in California, I turned heartache and grief into motivation ad inspiration. I began working with a production team in LA and after determining the high production costs, I decided to launch a Kickstarter Campaign to fund this expansion of my line. Long story short, my campaign was unsuccessful and I did not get the funding I needed in order to launch production. This felt like a huge loss. A huge fail and I sat with those feelings for about six months until I gained a clearer direction of what I wanted to do. In hindsight, I am so grateful for that “failure” because it allowed me to pause, reevaluate, get resourceful, and vision a rebirth of my brand. During this time, I traveled to Indonesia and got to work alongside indigenous artisans and learn more about natural dyeing, production and design. This stimulated my re-brand or rebirth as I like to call it, and gave me the confidence t0 come back to my project with more love, wisdom and resources.

All intimates are made of bamboo and naturally dyed to ensure the utmost care of the body and the Earth. We are proud to offer products that make a stance in a destructive industry such as fast fashion. Everything from the labels to packaging materials are either recycled, compostable or made of natural fibers.

To accompany eco-centered products that care about the body, Lekūna also focuses on holistic health and well-being practices. Check out the Vaginal Steaming page on the website to learn more about an ancient healing practice that provides healing both physically and emotionally.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe everything happens for a reason, as cliche as that may sound. Life has provided me with enough experiences to understand that truly nothing is by chance. Rather than luck, I consider blessings. Both good and bad, but all blessings. Each one a teacher. Each one an opportunity for growth. On that note, a huge shout out to my community and network of strong, powerful women who have supported me, believed in me, and encouraged me immensely along the way; the biggest blessing of all.
