Today we’d like to introduce you to Breana Pulizzi.
Breana, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I had always had a love for photography but I never thought about working towards owning a business. I grew up with a general love for art and my dad who graduated from film school, this really passed on the knowledge for capturing the perfect image and looking for the real moments in everything.
I started 2 weeks after my daughter was born in 2014. I attended a shoot and meet event where other SoCal photographers got together to do a shoot out. Photography is a never-ending learning curve and every photographer sees that moment differently. So when you put photographers in the same room it’s like mixing colors on an already painted canvas which creates a whole new art piece. It was incredible and inspiring to hear stories and watch other people work. I met many people at that shoot out that continue to be inspiration to this day I would say this was the moment I decided to really throw myself into the business side of photography.
Not to long after this decision, I had my first wedding. It was such an adrenaline rush. Being part of the planning and the step by step process leading up to the day. On top of the surreal moments of “I do” it just captured me as much as I was capturing the moment. I am a very emotionally drawn person so think the love that comes out at weddings really pulled me in.
I document life at its finest moments, how incredibly blessed is that.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it’s been a fight the whole way.
Nothing as wonderful as making a living doing what you love is easy. My whole life I have had people tell me I can’t, you won’t, you’re not capable. So anytime I have ever wanted to do anything these things replay over and over again in my mind.
To add to all of this being a college dropout and having people look at me like I wasn’t knowledgeable enough to successfully run my own business was so defeating. Self-doubt will always be a huge struggle, I love what I do and just want to be better. These people are letting me invest into their lives, trusting me to capture it accurately and it’s a huge responsibility to carry.
I have been blessed to have the best clients who say nothing but wonderful things about me. But the struggles I really faced where fighting to be better at my craft, learning how to run a business in an industry that is always changing. Learning what people wanted and how to provide it was a huge obstacle and still is because it’s never the same.
Breana Marie Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
This is always such a funny question to me. That is always the first question I get asked by other photographers, “What do I specialize in” The cliché answer would be to give you a specific category but if I am honest I can’t give you one. I can say this. I specialize in capturing life’s precious moments whatever they may be. I have done a range of everything and I could never pick “just one” thing to do because that would mean telling people I couldn’t be a part of this moment with them. The moment that they specifically chose me to capture for them. I can say I tend to be hired for weddings and children sessions the most.
I am known for sessions that you don’t see very often. I have used my wild 2-year-old as my little model to improve my craft. Her and I have so had many “dream” sessions that I end up getting hired to do for other people kids later. I am known as the life photographer. Clients hire me to capture the wedding, the babies, the anniversary, the birthday parties, the Christmas pictures. I literally watch these people grown and change over the years and it’s awesome.
I am proud that I never gave up, that I strive for me and that I don’t let the cliché boxes and lists keep me confined creatively.
I was told every time I have moved that it would kill my business and now I travel all over because people still wanted me even from other states to be a part of their memories. I think I am different because I refuse to be classified as one type of photographer. I want to be amazing at it all. I don’t let those boxes define and restrict me.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is an open-ended list of criteria. You set goals and when you meet them you set higher goals. Never be stagnant. Art was never meant to be put in these boxes of what it should or should not be.
