Meet Angela Hutchinson of Breaking into Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Hutchinson.

Angela, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My journey to Breaking into Hollywood started in Blockbuster video store. Yes, I’m dating myself a little but still under 40! 🙂 My mother and I were browsing for a Friday night movie to rent. After looking for about an hour, I shared with my mother the type of movie I wanted to see. She told me it sounded like a good movie and to go find it. I explained to her that was the TYPE of movie I wanted to see and had just made up the movie while in the store. She told me that it sounded so real and that if I made that up standing here in the store, then I should go write the movie. At the time I had recently graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Industrial & Operations Engineering. So writing a movie was not only the farthest thing from my mind, I actually had no training in writing a screenplay.

Nonetheless, I often follow advice from those who care about me. So, I purchased a book (“How to Write Movie in 21 Days” by Vikki King). And that’s exactly what I did. Shortly after, I decided I wanted to move to Los Angeles to get the movie made. A few weeks later, I drove cross country by myself from Chicago to Los Angeles.

It took me nearly 10 years to figure out how Hollywood worked in terms of the business and developing my artistic craft. I eventually produced and cast the feature film, as well as secured distribution upon completion. My movie “Hollywood Chaos” aired on Hulu and is now available on Amazon. I share more details about my dream journey and useful insights inside my comedic adventure memoir, Breaking into Hollywood, which is also available on Amazon.

Has it been a smooth road?
I have had many Sleepless Nights in Los Angeles! There were days when I wanted to move back home. I wanted to quit. The journey seemed so hard. Without any famous friends or rich family members, I could not at all foresee how I would raise the money to shoot a feature film. When I set out to write my first book (I now have 6 published books), I had writers block for days. I’m a mother of three young children, so there are always important distractions as I pursue my career as a mompreneur. I run a non-profit organization for artists which I founded in 2005 to help other entertainment professionals pursue their careers. In running multiple ventures, there are daily challenges. Struggle is crucial to achieving success. One of my favorite commercials is the voice-over for Michael Jordan’s Nike failure commercial where he talks about how he failed over and over in his lifetime, and THAT is why he succeeds. I too have been rejected a lot in my lifetime which is why I was honored to do a TEDx Talk on breaking barriers. My talk was entitled, “Create Your Own Yes, When You Keep Hearing No.” If you are hearing No, you may not be maximizing your gifts and talents. Use struggles to ignite the fire of your passion and be tenacious about your goals.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Breaking into Hollywood – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Founded in 2005, Breaking into Hollywood (BiH) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to help creative and business professionals in the entertainment industry pursue their careers with ICE (integrity, creativity and enthusiasm)! The organization strives to inspire its members and creative community-at-large to achieve their career dream. We have helped nearly 2,000 professionals over the years.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I absolutely love Los Angeles! What’s not to like?! Even the 405 traffic has a sweet spot for me because I reconnected with my now husband on the 405… I share in my TEDx Talk how paying attention to your environment can lead to wonderful opportunities.

My favorites about LA are the weather, the diversity (people and cuisine), and the cool “IT” factor. Los Angeles is the entertainment capital of the world, so I love being in the center of where the GRAMMYs, EMMYs, OSCARs and ESPYs happen.

It’s the city where dreams come true, but there’s a lot of rejection that comes with pursuing dreams. So, I suppose if I had to choose something that I like least it would be to see good friends move away because the journey can be difficult.
