Meet Brandon Wilburn of BQ Progressives in South Central Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Wilburn.

Brandon, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story, although relate able, is very special to me because of the circumstances involved and the people who were instrumental to the birth of my All Natural Hair Care Line.

I started really caring about my hair, as far as what I put into it, about ten years ago. My hair looked good but my scalp was paying the price. When I first started out, I was just using products that I saw other people using thinking if it worked for them then, it has to work for me. I wasn’t reading what ingredients those big companies were using in their products, I really didn’t have a clue on what was good for my hair, scalp, or body. About four years in, I noticed that my head was starting to itch a lot and my scalp was red in certain areas. At that time, I wasn’t equating it to the products I was using, but then my scalp started breaking out and leaving open wounds that bled. After doing a little research, I found that the products I was using had a lot of ingredients in them that really weren’t good for my scalp or even my hair for that matter. So I started buying all-natural products thinking that it would solve the scalp problem and leave my hair looking just as good as before. I found that those all-natural products helped my scalp a bit but not fully. I still had itching and wounds caused by the previous products I was using. I found myself buying 3 or 4 products to do what 1 product was doing for me before but at least my scalp wasn’t as bad, or so I thought.

When I realized that my scalp wasn’t fully healing, I got fed up and was ready to cut all of my hair off and fix my scalp with medication, I had reached a breaking point. It was at that pint, my wife jokingly suggested I make my own product, so I did. I researched the best all-natural butters and oils for hair, I found out what butters were good for softening hair, what oils promoted hair growth, and so on and so forth. I started combining all raw natural ingredients and used them on my hair. Within days my scalp stopped itching, and within weeks my wounds healed. After having kids, I wasn’t going to put just anything in their hair, so I developed a formula for them that left their hair and scalp looking and feeling healthy. My wife saw what my products did for my kids and myself, so she asked if I could make a product for her hair too. After using it, she loved it and jokingly suggested I start my own company and sell my hair care products, so I did.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been easy for me.  Like most people, the first step is coming up with an idea.  The struggle is what comes next; and that was my first hurdle, finding out what to do next. I wanted to be able to learn from others so I wouldn’t fall in the same holes they did. I have a cousin who is a small business owner.  I watched him, asked him questions on business and his experiences.  I tried to use his experiences to my advantage. I believe that if you want a business to succeed,  you have to put your all into it, meaning time and money. Money was another struggle. I have a family to provide for so any extra money I had went into getting my company off of the ground.  With that being said, it took time to save so that I could order and pay for the necessary items I needed to start my hair care line.
