Meet Brandon Richards

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Richards.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 2016, I was fresh out of high school. I didn’t have much of an idea of what I wanted to be in life or what I wanted to pursue. I was applying for jobs like crazy just trying to get some sort of work but I was having no luck. I decided to scrape together some cash and bought a cheap ukulele from a local music shop so I could at least say I was learning to do something new while I was searching for a job. I learned a couple of my favorite songs and started learning how to write my own within a couple of months. I eventually recorded my first three originals at my friend’s house in his bathroom with a budget microphone and basic recording software.

After hearing that people genuinely liked and resonated with the songs I wrote, I became really passionate about writing music. After finding a job, I bought myself a guitar and my own equipment to record in my room. Learning the basics of guitar came naturally to me and I had an albums worth of songs within a few months! Since then, I’ve grown a lot as an artist. I’m always learning new stuff and I’m constantly striving to make myself and my music better!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Being a DIY artist is always about jumping through hurdles. You always have to find a way to get things done with what you have available. My equipment has never been top-notch because I try to be very budget-friendly. Cheaper equipment becomes limiting when you’re trying to sound as good as your favorite artists! But I’ve learned that you don’t need the best gear in the game to make music that people will love! As long as you’re writing true to yourself and making art from your heart, people will appreciate it!

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
My music comes from my heart and my thoughts when I’m up at night and can’t sleep. I write a lot about relationships and existential dread. I feel like those are two topics many people are familiar with.. I really try to make music that people can listen to and say “hey, this guy knows what I’m feeling right now” and I hope it can make my listeners feel better knowing that they’re not alone and that others go through the same things in life.

What were you like growing up?
Even when I was growing up, I loved to create things! I loved to draw and write little stories but my all-time favorite was Legos! I would build all day and loved to make crazy spaceships and at one point, made a working gumball machine. Ironically I was a very shy kid, I couldn’t even give people my orders at restaurants. I eventually grew out of that though and I don’t really suffer from stage fright.
