Meet Brandon Morrison of whyrHymer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Morrison.

Brandon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I moved on a wing and a prayer from a tiny, no red light town called Olla in Louisiana to LA in 1998. Originally had the idea of being an actor and quickly found by way of my job as a handyman for a Beverly Hills hardware store that I loved to build.

I was lucky to live in a bungalow and the owner let me use the garage as a shop and every year since I have pushed myself and the business to constant evolve and grow as one.

We have had the showroom on La Brea for 6 years and have recently moved into a 5000-square foot workroom in the heart of LA’s industrial mecca, Vernon.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh, Boy! Nothing worth a damn is never easy to achieve. I had it easy in the beginning getting started with my work as a handyman being the conduit, but it wasn’t to last. A year in, I almost cut my left hand off using a table saw and slowly recovered from that, but I pushed through and learned what not to do next time.

The house I lived in and worked out of the garage from was foreclosed on due to the owner (not me) perpetrating mortgage fraud. My wife and I were one month away from a home birth of our first child! We had to find another way for me to work from a home garage because wasn’t established enough to rent a space. We did at the last minute and then three years later those owners went into foreclosure! We’re now safe and cozy in our own space.

Growth is very hard when your growth is tied to what you can produce. Efficiency is key and it requires you to trim all the fat from the business model.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about whyrHymer – what should we know?
whyrHymer is a boutique furniture and lighting company. In addition to our own line, we also produce custom work for other artists of all disciplines.

I’d say whyrHymer is known for producing high quality, interesting and comforting furniture and lighting.

I’m most proud of how I as a designer and my team have been able to adapt my designs to our CNC machine. By way of that it has allowed us to grow rapidly and develop revenue streams that have a quick turnover rate. That allows us and me as the designer to stay true to whyrHymer and let some of the other aspects of our skillset cover overhead.

Myself and my showroom manager Michael Alpert are really good looking and easy to deal with! We are cool with people no matter what walk of life they come from. When you get in the whyrHymer orbit, we take care of you and people remember that.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Honesty. I never bullshit people except if I know I’ll have no problem finding the answer I just pretended to know. I’m what I call an “ethical hustler”. You do and say what you need to in order to keep it all moving forward but you leave a trail of goodness behind you. Keep that in check and your good to go.
