Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon G. Alexander.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I moved to LA from my hometown of Killeen, TX in 2007, after graduating high school to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. It all started with dance for me. I spent the next nine years performing with artists such as Beyoncé, Raphael Saadiq and Jennifer Lopez. In 2012 my energy shifted from dance and I wanted to use my voice to promote healthy views of masculinity, romance, love and relationships. Julian Mitchell, a good friend of mine who I highly respect as an entrepreneur played a major role in encouraging me to not just share my thoughts on Facebook but to actually start my own business. In 2013 New Age Gents was born. I believe my message of what it means to be a gentleman, a man, a father, a husband resonates with everyone.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I will say no road worth exploring is smooth. Trying to navigate the narrative of what healthy masculinity is, isn’t a cakewalk. You’re coming up against hurdles and walls from both sexes that have been in place for decades. It’s all part of the territory, especially when you come up against people who wholeheartedly are trying their best to save an old mindset around what it means to be a man that does not serve us as a community.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
New Age Gents is a lifestyle platform that’s building better men by discussing what it means to be a modern-day gentleman. I tackle topics in the realm of masculinity, love and relationships. I’m calling all men to be better. Starting this brand has led to amazing opportunities from being interviewed on various podcasts sharing my views on masculinity, to being a guest speaker at different relationship events/panels and most recently it’s opened the door to a new talk show that I’m co-developing, co-hosting entitled, “Men Talking Shift”. People can join myself, Corey Emanuel (@coreyemanuel) and Justin Riley (@jrilez), in the conversation about manhood at @MenTalkingShift on Instagram.
The audience has really taken to the “Gentleman By Choice” hoodies that are sold on Etsy. I didn’t want to create another cool t-shirt or sweater. I wanted to create merchandise with a message and meaning. I wanted whoever buys New Age Gents merch to feel like they were a part of a movement. That’s exactly what’s been happening. Celebrities, like Grey’s Anatomy actor Giacomo Gianniotti, have posted photos rocking the “Gentleman By Choice” hoodie to show their support but also to say they stand with me in the idea being a gentleman. It’s a daily choice to be kind, loving and compassionate to others.
I’m most proud of the fact that my brand reaches a range of people from stay at home parents to blue-collar folks to CEO of corporations. I believe my willingness to be vulnerable and speak from my own life experiences is what sets me apart from other brands/companies that may have similar messaging to mine.
What were you like growing up?
As a kid, I was curious. I was always creating stories and worlds in my mind. I guess that’s why I got into acting, dancing and public speaking as an adult. I always wanted to find a way to tell stories. I loved being outdoors, drawing and spent a lot of time around my family. We were a tribe and whenever someone moved, we all moved. All of my earliest memories involve spending the night at aunts house or my family being over mine. It shaped me.
