Meet Brandon Bonafede of Brandon Bonafede Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Bonafede.

Brandon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Photography has always been something my family has done but it wasn’t until watching my brother’s success that I got inspired to do it myself. My brother Vincent started at a young age and was able to win an international award as well as multiple publications before he was 16. Seeing him making money and getting recognition motivated me to start my own photography business. I was lucky to have my brother teach me about photography but I also found that a lot of what you learn is by doing. Living close to Yosemite National Park has been great, it has been my classroom for landscape photography. I also spend a lot of time in Orange County with family and shooting beach scenes is one of my favorite subjects. I am 14 years old now and over my short time in photography I have already experienced some success. I have placed first at my local fair twice over the past two years and was published online by Outdoor Photographer Magazine. I started to sell my artwork online last year ( with some success, Los Angeles seems to be where the majority of my views come from. I am also on Instagram under @bb__image, because of school, I am not as active as I would like to be.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Getting my name out and becoming more visible is a real challenge for me. Instagram and Facebook are fee places to do this but it is real hard and takes time. It also seems that there are large groups of people on Instagram that just like each other’s stuff but it really doesn’t go anywhere. I wish it was different and that I had a better chance of people seeing my work that will be potential customers. I also think that because of my age it is hard to be taken seriously. But, I am not too worried about this part because I am getting older every day.

Brandon Bonafede Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am able to produce my landscape art in many different mediums and an assortment of other products too, they can be shipped worldwide. I hope to build my online sales to the level of what my brother has but I know it will take time. So, I am just going to focus on making the best images I can and having fun doing it. Starting my business, I have had a few successes getting my artwork seen. Most recently I was accepted to display one of my prints at the Fresno Yosemite International Airport. I was excited to be the youngest artist to have a piece on display. I feel like my perspective in photography and my age is what really sets me apart from others.

In March 2018, I am going to have a selection of images on display at the K-Jewel Gallery during the Fresno Art Hop which is a city-wide event. I will be sharing half of the gallery with my brother Vincent, it should be a lot of fun. I hope to gain more followers from this event!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For me, I think success is more than just selling a bunch of prints. It is important to me that I sell my work but success is all about reaching my goals. Since I have started in photography I have wanted to be published in a magazine and win a national competition.

Reaching this goal would make me feel that my work is really good enough to stand out.
