Today we’d like to introduce you to Brad Jenkins and Mark Daugherty.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Brad and Mark. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Mark and I are both actors in Los Angeles (how novel!). I’ve been acting for about 4 years now after working in healthcare for 13 years. Mark has been acting for almost 14 years and worked for a non-profit traveling the country to host keynotes for groups of aspiring actors and to teach new actors on-camera auditioning technique.
The tools an actor needs–headshots, classes, demo reels, audition taping–can be very pricy, with prices and quality not always in sync.
Mark and I, after our own personal experiences, we realized there was a need for quality resources for our fellow artists. With that in mind, we founded The Actor’s Collective as a way to give back to our fellow actors by providing affordable and effective tools to equip their careers for success, and shift the paradigm that acting necessities must be pricy to be valuable.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Some of the initial struggles honestly were more with finding a suitable studio space than anything else. Initially we rented theater space week-to-week to hold our on-camera audition class and we shot headshots out of our apartment. Our first storefront studio in Glendale wasn’t ideal due to locale, so we decided our next space should be more central to the entertainment industry. The space we’re in now in North Hollywood is perfect in terms of location and dynamic capabilities because we are able to modulate the space to whatever services we need to provide day-to-day.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Actor’s Collective – what should we know?
We provide all the tools an actor needs to succeed at prices that don’t break the bank. Our studio, in every way, is focused on creating and providing a community atmosphere. Our on-camera classes emphasize collaboration and support while also empowering actors to shift their thinking from ‘what does casting want me to do?’ to ‘this is how I want to tell my story.’ Our headshots are focused on images that capture your essence as an actor. They also are shot with Casting Directors in mind – Casting pores through THOUSANDS of headshots per day for ONE role. Our pictures are crafted so that you “pop” out when you are a 1-inch by 1-inch thumbnail amidst thousands. The demo reels we shoot parallel popular television and film genres such as procedural interrogations and medical dramas, all expertly produced by the award-winning Beleeve Entertainment.
We’re probably most well-known for our $15 self-taped auditions. Yes, $15 for a 30-Minute session.
As an actor, if I have 3 or 4 auditions to put on tape in a week, I absolutely don’t want to spend $50 to $100 per tape! Our tapes are high quality video and audio, readers who are experienced actors, and quick turnaround and transmission usually within 1 hour after taping. Plus, we’re the most affordable taping service in Los Angeles.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
A lot of credit goes to my family for being my biggest cheerleaders. A huge thank you goes to all of our incredible clients and our ongoing on-camera students have provided a wealth of support and friendship to each other and to Mark and I. Friends and colleagues including Leslie Nesbit, Shannan Reeve and Chelese Belmont of Beleeve Entertainment, David Errigo, Jr, Alyse Castillo, Sarah Anarna, Kaleb Rudy, Jeff Chaney, Naomi Pisnieski, Kelvin Batiste and I apologize if I missed anyone!–thank you for sticking by our sides even through those stressful 80 hour work weeks and for helping us build this community. Thank you Doctor Sze for your leadership mentoring. Thank you to all the agents and managers who trust us with your clients and give us the opportunity to impact lives positively every day. And from me personally, thank you Mark for believing in me, always pushing me to be my best, and taking this leap with me.
