Today we’d like to introduce you to Bozenna Bogucka and Lukasz Bogucki.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We are both professional designers, with master degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. It was tough school, five years of very strict and demanding programs but learned a great deal.
We came to America some thirty years ago and always worked in different fields of design: interior, graphic, industrial, exhibit design, even couture collections.
In 2000, while working on new line of lamps we got inspired by stainless steel mesh, the most beautiful, highly industrial and rarely seen material, mostly hidden deep down in the filtering systems. We decided to design something useful that would take advantage of the looks of that mesh. That’s how the concept was born and we started our great adventure of designing and making evening purses and handbags out of stainless steel mesh.
We are fascinated by stainless steel mesh after all these years no less than in the first days of our adventure.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The beginnings were far from being smooth. First, we needed to feel comfortable with the new, difficult to handle material, develop technics and ways of dealing with it. Then, after probably year and a half, when we got our first line of steel handbags, we needed to somehow market them. It was not our expertise at all. It was year 2001 and we decided to visit some showrooms specializing in handbags. First LA, then New York, Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, etc. Dealers were enthusiastic, some store owners just as well, so it was quite easy to get initial orders. But, down the road it turned out, that our purses wouldn’t sell the way everybody would anticipate. So it was a struggle, expense of keeping quite large inventory as samples frozen in number of showrooms. With not enough sales we were not too happy with the formula.
Next thing we tried was to take part in the gift trade shows. First was LA Gift Show and we did quite good, turned out, that we do not belong to the fashion and accessory market, but do very well with the fine gift, design galleries and museum type stores (art museums but also opera houses, symphony halls, etc). Next were the shows in San Francisco and New York and we took off.
We did that for some 5 years and decided that since we make everything by hand we have to slow down and reinvent the way we sell our art. We quit trade shows but still worked with some stores and galleries, keeping only the most prestigious ones.
The new formula was to sell directly to the public and collectors taking part in the highest rated arts festivals around the country. We like it that way, we get to travel quite a bit, see the country and make a good living too.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bo’s Art Inc – what should we know?
We design and make beautiful things from the material that is purely industrial, used mostly (and hidden) in filter and printing applications.
If you think of it, nothing really is made of stainless steel mesh for its good looks, so we are proud to bring it to daylight for everybody to see and admire.
We call our line The Opera Collection; it consists of some 40 models named after famous operas. All work from design to the finishing touches is done in our Los Angeles workshop.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
All the credit goes to our clients and fans, many of them collectors and we are happy to hear, that they don’t keep our creations in the closet with the rest of accessories, rather have them displayed like art pieces.
