Meet Bob Pranga of Dr. Christmas in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bob Pranga.

Bob, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Dr. Christmas has been around officially since 1995. I got my start working at Macy’s Herald Square, New York after moving to Los Angeles. I work for Kathy Hilton Paris’s mother who introduced me to Los Angeles. From that point on, I realized you had to be on television if you want to have success. So I reached out to Leeza Gibbons whose receptionist thought I was a real doctor and put me right through to the lady herself. I explained to her that I thought it would be fun to be on her show and she said OK, and the rest kind of became history. From that point on, people got to know me, my reputation got around, and here we are.

Has it been a smooth road?
I often make the joke that I am the biggest 30 year overnight sensation anyone’s ever met. It’s been an interesting road also due to the fact that Christmas only comes once a year. We don’t always have the benefit of progressing on a yearly basis, just every six months. Along the way, I’ve got to meet hundreds of people who help me, challenge me, and taught me how to make it in this great city of Los Angeles.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Dr. Christmas story. Tell us more about the business.
My initial reason for starting this company with my partner Debi Staron was to give people’s time back. It made me very sad to constantly hear people grumbling about Christmas was coming, so I was trying to find a way to make it enjoyable again. What Dr. Christmas does is provide a custom holiday experience from start to finish. We come in to design a look work with the clientele, install and come back after the holidays, take it down, and put It away. We have also branched out into film and television sets commercials as well as private homes and corporate businesses.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
One great thing about Christmas is that it comes every year. Christmas is always about looking back, so there’s always an element of the past. And your present Christmas technology has made the electricity side of Christmas a little more futuristic but for the most part it’s really about making people feel comfortable at home with a glass of wine by the fire.
