Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Syd Yang.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Stephanie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Healing was always something I reached out to others for — knowing that my body held layers of trauma and emotional wounding that needed to be cared for. From my pre-teen years onward, I wandered and struggled with depression, anxiety and eating disorders — fiercely navigating space within my body and life to access a sense of belonging and freedom. Somehow, I knew it was there, but I never quite could find the path I longed for until I began working with a number of energy healers and a spiritually based therapist in my early 30s. With their guidance, the path forward into comprehensive and holistic healing began to make itself known.
Working with those healers, I began to experientially understand that healing is possible — for all bodies, including mine — especially when we approach our stories, histories, experiences, and trauma with love, compassion, acceptance, and spaciousness. Understanding the impacts of oppression, racism, intergenerational trauma, gender-based violence and forced migration + diaspora was also critical in my understanding of how healing and bodies were connected. As my healing emerged and my spiritual practice deepened, I began to understand my purpose and my calling — to weave wholeness back into bodies that have been disconnected through oppression and violence, through energy healing, intuitive coaching, and spiritual practice.
My work today is deeply informed by the years I worked in social justice organizing, facilitating feminist leadership and learning spaces and as a writer and an artist. For me, being visible as a queer, mixed-race healer matters — and helping to nurture healing justice centered spaces for other queer and trans folks, people of color and those who experience marginalization in mainstream society is very much at the core of my work.
We heal together. This is a critical piece of how I believe we will achieve liberation for all bodies and all experiences.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a road full of twists + turns, and many adventures, I would say! Yes to many struggles and challenges, and ongoing invitations to growth. Running my own business — being an entrepreneur — was never something I thought I wanted to do. However, this is how the path has chosen to unfold. Learning how to manage a spiritually rooted business within a capitalist structure is an ongoing learning curve for me. I am grateful for the learning spaces (in particular: https://turtletank.co) and mentors who surround me that guide me forward.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Blue Jaguar Healing Arts story. Tell us more about the business.
Blue Jaguar Healing Arts is a holistic healing practice that guides individuals and small groups through challenging transitions (such as complete life resets, grief + loss, life purpose (re)claiming, gender affirmation journeys, eating disorder recovery, and more!) into life-affirming transformation. I work with people across many spectrums of life experience and around the world. My approach is spirit-centered and energy based. In a session, I weave together Reiki, energy healing, breath work, guided meditation, movement practice and inquiry to help shape a path forward with my client. There is always a flow of laughter (and yes, sometimes tears) as we clear and release old patterns and welcome in transformation and spaciousness in our bodies.
Blue Jaguar Healing Arts also specializes in providing complementary support for eating disorders, with a focus on bulimia and binge eating. As a bulimia survivor myself whose full recovery was made possible through the support of powerful energy healers and spiritual teachers, I am honored to have been called to build a healing practice that holds others in similar ways. This is the work that wakes me up every morning and which I am so honored to be able to share.
Energy healing modalities (such as Reiki) are a powerful (and gentle) way to move into and through recovery. I offer an intersectional, holistic approach that honors and respects ALL of who my clients are – their body, their race and culture, their gender, their sexuality, their belief systems, their age, their family systems, their trauma and their longings.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I would reframe this as synchronicity, as opposed to luck. There have been so many instances of things aligning just at the right moment that have helped me and my practice move forward — from the conversations I engage in, the people I meet, the opportunities that arise. At the same time, the synchronicity has shown up as doors being shut, opportunities dissolving and revenue drying up. These moments have been difficult to navigate, and each time have asked me to step back into trust and creativity into new possibilities and paths.
I do not find this path easy or pain-free. It is challenging. It requires me to constantly be learning and daily be opening up to change and transformation. You could say the guiding principle of Blue Jaguar Healing Arts: “change – practice – transform” lives out in me every day, as I live and breath this work!
My work is grounded in spiritual practice, ceremony, and prayer. I am daily in dialogue with the divine and my ancestors and I feel their hands constantly holding and guiding me forward. In co-creating my practice in this way, I find that synchronicity is a daily experience.
