Meet Blaine Eastcott of Rockreation Sport Climbing and Fitness Centers in Orange County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Blaine Eastcott.

Blaine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started climbing in High School. My parents were outdoorsy, traveling type of people and they instilled that sense of adventure early on in me.

I got stuck on a rock when I was 18. I climbed up it and couldn’t get back down easily. I decided then that if I didn’t die that I was going to get some proper training in rock climbing and that led me to a career in the industry.

After graduating college in 1997, I got a part time job at Rockreation because I couldn’t afford the membership. I worked every job in the company from the bottom up and was able to purchase the company in 2010 from the old owner.

I got to this position because I love what I do. Work will always be work, with some hassles, but if you love what you do, it helps you get through the tough parts much more easily.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing has ever been smooth. It is my experience that the folks that succeed are the ones that can make a plan and adjust on the fly when things go sideways.

Some of the struggles are just staying afloat owning your own business. You have to be careful with your expenses and plan for rainy days. Working in CA is not easy as there are tons of taxes and regulations that cost businesses a lot of capital that could be used to grow the business, or to pay out to my employees.

Please tell us about Rockreation Sport Climbing and Fitness Centers.
We are in indoor rock climbing and Fitness Company. We are centered around the sport of rock climbing, but we have yoga and fitness classes. We want to be your one stop shop for fitness. We have traditional workout equipment like free weights, etc., and we also do newer fitness trends like High Intensity Interval Training, as well as other types of training. We do private and group classes in climbing, yoga and various fitness activities. We have kettle bells, and battle ropes, tires to flip, and other nontraditional things to work out on so you never get bored.

I try to run my business like a family. This helps create a great community and vibe in the gym. We are known for our great climbing routes, clean, awesome locations, friendly, knowledgeable staff and a great community of climbers. When you are in our facilities, we want you to feel like you are at your second home.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Traveling with my parents. I had been to more places by the time I was 17 than most will go in their life. Visiting China in 1987 was a highlight.
