Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Mark.
Erika, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My story begins in Youngstown, Ohio where I grew up. At a young age, my parents encouraged me to be creative, independent, unique, and free spirit I am today. Much of my childhood was spent playing dress up in my grandmother’s vintage slips and jewels. I soon became enamored with Marilyn Monroe and started dressing up in leopard print, fur boleros, and red lipstick. I wanted to be just as fabulous as the blonde bombshell!
I took the first steps in pursuing my dreams by studying fashion at Philadelphia University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and then in Florence, Italy. I eventually moved west to pursue my career in fashion – seeking the individuality, freedom, and magic of Hollywood, California! I worked with such high fashion names as Betsey Johnson, Baby Phat, Nanette Lepore, Boy George, and Christian Audigier.
Black Cake’s epic adventure began when I came across a box of vintage lingerie at an estate sale. I soon became obsessed with hunting everywhere for more sexy pieces. Realizing vintage lingerie in pristine condition was very difficult to find, I began creating ready to wear clothing inspired by my favorite pieces in my collection as well as old Hollywood glam and, of course, Marilyn.
Has it been a smooth road?
Of course, there were many twists and turns in the road. I have always viewed clothes as an extension and expression of one’s lifestyle and Black Cake emulates the sexy essence of Hollywood, rock n roll, and Marilyn Monroe.
When I started Black Cake I did not know where I was going with it. I have spent many many many late nights at my home in Hollywood, with my 3 dogs, figuring this out. As a self-financed one woman show, I wear many hats and am involved in every aspect of my business. This can be extremely overwhelming and stressful at times. In addition, manufacturing a high-end line domestically has its own challenges. However, I live by the core belief that as you follow your passion the world becomes a better place. Black Cake is my passion.
Proudly, last year, Black Cake relaunched itself by creating a series of Zodiac Sex Position Massage Candles and is slowly expanding into sexy home goods. This endeavor has been well received by clients.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Black Cake Clothing – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Black Cake began being known for our sexy silhouettes and unique, lush fabrics and has evolved into a cult brand that indulges rock luxury, embraces old-school Hollywood glam, and adds a hint of sexy decadence. Our must have item is the Starlet Lace Wrap Dress.
Slowly, Black Cake is being identified with it’s Zodiac Sex Massage Candles. These candles are a combination of coconut and soy wax, natural oils, and floral notes poured into a beautifully hand illustrated glass cylinder that radiates sensuality and epitomizes seductive elegance. Each Zodiac Sex Massage candle reveals a sex position that fits your astrological sign’s unique and sexy personality and is packaged with a sexy fortune revealing why each zodiac sign is illustrated as it is.
I am extremely proud that I have hand drawn the illustrations that adorn each candle, making each an original piece of artwork made in the USA.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
This is a very easy question to answer. I love that Los Angeles embraces individuality. Many years ago, I wrote the following mantra for myself:
My purpose in life is to be me (true to myself) – a fabulous, genuine, unique rock star that excuses its creativity and free spirit to inspire the world. Los Angeles allows me to live this purpose. What do I NOT like? The mayor.
