Today we’d like to introduce you to Bianca White Nasca.
Bianca, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My husband and I started this store as a labor of love. We love traveling and scouring antique malls and thrift stores. I had been a stylist/costume designer for tv/film/music videos/commercials/print for 20 years, so I had amassed a rather large collection of beautiful vintage clothes. I found this amazing space on a sleepy little part of the not very popular part of Melrose and my husband went to town turning the space into my vision. For the store.
My husband now creates his own line of menswear as well as doing alterations in the back of the store. We wanted to be able to carry high and low price points so that there could be little something for everyone. We also carry a wide range of stuff in the store that doesn’t limit the store to being just a vintage clothing store.
We also sell candles, soaps, blankets, pillows, pottery, CBD healing oils/salves, RBG action figures, gnome crayons, unicorn mount heads, roller skates, umbrellas, art, purses, hats, shoes, sunglasses, new clothing and of course lots of the best-curated vintage clothing!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We are a relatively new business (Oct.4, 2018). So in the few months that we’ve been open already, we have had some really great success thus far. That being said, it took me about 25 years to actually finally have the courage, the capital and the help of a super supportive and handy husband to make this store a reality!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We specialize in vintage technically, but I like to say we have a little bit of everything for everyone. We have a really great brand of Australian roller skates called Impala that we sell, and we keep a pair in the window, and that makes them really popular!
My husband’s brand BoysDontCry is a brand that obviously we are extremely proud of. We are set apart from the rest because we aren’t trendy, we are timeless. We thrive on being different, rebellious and standing out. Cult of Personality is not for the wallflowers.
What were you like growing up?
I’m an unabashed certified A grade brat. I have always had a bit of a rebellious spirit, and I tried way too hard to blend in but to no avail. Finally, I just embraced that I would never blend in with the rest and I had to just settle into the fact that I was different and as a result, I have been standing out ever since.
I was obsessed with my great grandmother, and I would always grill her about what it was like to grow up when she was growing up in France during two world wars. Her mementos that she saved and brought with her in a steamer trunk were my favorite.
I would ask her time and time again about the mementos just to hear those fabulous stories again. It was like reading a great book over and over. These things had history, meaning. Enough sentiment was put into the creation of these things, and the craftsmanship was obvious, these things lived on well past their expiration dates.
Unlike now where it feels we live in such a disposable world, these things were made to last the test of time. From these things and hearing these stories my love affair grew for all things vintage. If its old, it has a great story, somebody’s loved it. I love that.
