Today we’d like to introduce you to Better Practice.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Nearly nine out of ten music teachers say that practice matters most and lack of practice is the top reasons why most music students fail. Knowing this and having a child enter an age to start learning music, I wanted my child to enjoy learning music and didn’t want to waste time nor money on an endeavor where the odds were stacked against us. Music itself is fun and joyful, but learning it can be tedious, especially for kids! In studying this problem, I identified that there was a huge misalignment between the needs of Gen Z (our young students today) and the way music practice is currently structured.
Our dream was to see music schools transformed into thriving communities where teachers and students are connected throughout the week, and students are immersed in the joy of music in their daily practice. We used technology for what it was good at doing: communications, instant access, personalization, analytics to: 1) eliminate the most common excuses for not practicing, 2) modernize the experience making it engaging and social, and 3) utilize proven learning and motivational techniques like self-regulated learning and spaced repetition to improve learning. We now have a state-of-the-art motivational practice tool that is helping student, teachers, and parents worldwide play their roles more effectively!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like most businesses based on a new idea, we’ve struggled with getting teachers to understand what the app can and is designed to do. There weren’t many apps focused on practice before us, so although teachers knew about the importance of practice, it was still hard to convince many that they should be investing as much into practice as they are in their lessons! We’re putting so much power in the hands of teachers that many of them aren’t sure what to do and how to utilize it. So, there’s a lot of education involved, which is where our free orientations, demos, and our blog [blog.betterpracticeapp.com] comes to play. We write about what’s wrong with the lesson system, why many students get frustrated and quit, and how to turn that all around!
Please tell us about Better Practice.
Better Practice is both a lesson- and practice-management app in one! We try to make music practice as painless and fun as possible for both the student and the teacher. Music schools who adopt Better Practice use it to create an online community for their school and manage all of their lesson plans.
We’re a young company with a quickly evolving product. Instead of automating things that don’t work particularly well, we are focused on tackling problem areas in learning music and practice head-on. We’re taking proven learning techniques, along with best practices in behavioral and cognitive science and applying them to music education.
We also work very closely with our teachers. Since most of these things have never been done before in music education, we’re learning from their experiences and listen closely to their feedback. We incorporate new enhancements to our product weekly and are making big changes to our products every few months. The exciting part is we’re only scratching the surface of the potential impact we can have on the industry.
Another differentiator is that although we’re an online service, we’re also a full-service company. We pride ourselves in providing good old-fashion mom and pop service where we will go the extra mile to help our customers. Our goal is to help our customers be successful. When they succeed, we succeed, so we do what we can to help.
