Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Sigman.
Ben, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The company started when I was done with UCLA, wherever I worked, they were always asking me for assistance with building databases, coding, assisting with security and networking – so I decided to start my own business on the side of my full-time job.
Eventually, a company wanted to hire me full time, so I needed to hire someone. Then that happened again and again while I built up the business and slowly grew the team.
Ashkaan who is my business partner joined as a junior associate 6-7 years ago, and now he basically runs all of our operations. We have grown year over year and continue to work with really amazing clients; we are super grateful to the diversity of LA and all of the people here working that we can assist with designing, building, and running their infrastructure.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are always struggles in growing. Both in acquiring new clients and then finding good staff to help with them. We developed a really great interview process that assists with filtering out the signal from the noise by asking 10 detailed questions to be sent in an email with the resume. That assists us in finding out how our candidates think about the things we think about.
Based on reading those questions, you can learn a lot about someone in a pre-interview. Resumes never tell the entire story of a person – how could they? For acquiring new clients, we always ask for referrals. We learned that we didn’t need a fancy referral program – lots of our clients love us and want to help us grow and succeed.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about We Solve Problems – what should we know?
We are an IT consulting company. We specialize in industries with high security and compliance needs – healthcare, finance, and entertainment.
We work with companies on infrastructure, compliance, security, and support for all of their critical services. We are known for providing a very hands-on personal approach.
Our clients trust us because we personally handle all of their technology needs instead of handing them off to 3rd parties.
One thing that sets us apart is that we have built our own custom monitoring and alerting stack that lets us know about systemic issues or threats before our clients know about them – we monitor all aspects of their technology infrastructure.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
There are so many people that inspire me. I really make an effort to focus on learning from what is working for other people and not to hate on them or criticize them for what isn’t working. My father has always been a huge mentor and support, I call him and ask about all kinds of things about business and consulting.
The women in my life – friends, my girlfriend, and especially my mom have been a huge factor in our success. She helps us with everything, and I’m really lucky to have her involved. She moved to LA to come work with us and help the company succeed in so many ways.
Additionally, I would say that Brian Kadison taught us a lot of the potential that we weren’t harnessing and how to go out and find it. He helped us win one of our most important and highest-profile clients.
