Meet BEE Music School

Today we’d like to introduce you to BEE Music School.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is BEE Uyen Phuong, I am the founder and principal and BEE Music School. I established the school in January 2015, right after I moved from Boston to California. After six years, we now have two locations in Santa Ana and Westminster. The school started out as BEE Piano Studio, then we expanded to classes of Guitar, Violin, Drum, Vocal (private and group lesson) to students of all ages.

It has always been my dream to create a place for everyone to explore music, whether just for enjoyment or pursuing a professional career. It would have been much easier if I just teach my piano students at home to have a stable livelihood, but personally I don’t see the joy in that. I want to have a musical community of students that jams together in ensembles, performs music in events, and learns from one another. Ultimately, that is most rewarding to me.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
At BEE Music School, we believe that each student requires a different approach to learning, so the school is attentive about assigning specific teachers to students. We try to avoid the “one size fits all” way of doing things. Nowadays, parents are very mindful about their children’s extra-curricular education, so I want to ensure the quality of teaching that we provide. I personally interview and select the faculty so that I can identify the strengths of each teacher.

When the lockdown happened in March 2020, students could not attend in-person classes. So I had to offer online classes. Even though it was a fitting solution at the time, teaching an instrument online takes away the human interaction that is crucial. That was the most difficult time for BEE Music School. But I am very grateful for the students who love BEE Music School and stick with us through the tough times.

Having opened the second location right after the peak of the pandemic, I am proud of the progress of BEE Music School currently. Enrollment grew even more than before the pandemic.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
BEE Music School offers music classes in Piano, Guitar, Bass, Drum, Violin, Vocal, Kids’ Choir & Dance. Our private lessons include 30-minute, 45-minute, and 60-minute sessions.

The School often hosts Recitals and Showcases for students to perform. These events are fun gathering for all parents and students. In addition, they will help motivate the students and examine their progress.

BEE Music School is founded by principal BEE Uyen Phuong. She is an award-winning concert pianist, who graduated from Berklee College of Music (Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance), and New England Conservatory (Master of Music in Contemporary Improvisation). She is also a faculty of Orange Unified School District. Other than academia, BEE Uyen Phuong has made many Television appearances, as well of stage performances.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I always do things based on my gut instincts, and I learn as I go. BEE Music School is not only a business but also an artistic and educational establishment. So as the founder and principal, I have to wear many hats at the same time to run the school: from businesswoman to teacher, to pianist… My advice is to try to keep “a cold head, and a warm heart”. A cold head will help you keep the reputation and financial stability of the business, while a warm heart will give it meaning and passion. If you can balance those two elements, your business is likely to thrive.
