Meet Becca Esopenko and Jordan Lunsford of PrettyPathetic in NoHo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Becca Esopenko and Jordan Lunsford.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Both of us grew up with a passion for music and were raised in musical and supportive families. We got into music for the fun of it when we were younger but eventually started taking it more seriously and made the move to LA to pursue it fully. We never completely understood what our sound should be since we were influenced by so many different genres until we met in 2016 and created our first track, “skin.” We instantly connected on past heartbreaks, confusion within religion, and shitty emo Christian bands. Once we started to see the shift hip-hop was taking, we realized we could combine all of our favorite genres into one project. We decided to become a duo named PrettyPathetic. Shortly after releasing our first visual for “youmightberight” we realized we needed to solidify what our sound should be exactly. We are currently working with different musicians and producers to mold PrettyPathetic into what we’ve always dreamed of.

Has it been a smooth road?
As far as our process goes within creating music, it couldn’t be more seamless. But, when it comes to releasing music, we’ve had to overcome the vulnerability that comes with putting ourselves on a platform. At first, selecting shitty free beats off of YouTube was a struggle but lately, we’ve been lucky enough to work with producers to create our sound from scratch.

Please tell us about PrettyPathetic.
PrettyPathetic is an alternative hip-hop duo combining 2008 emo melodies and feels with current hip-hop production. Growing up, we looked to music to help us cope and hope to provide the same relief and understanding for our listeners. We take pride in the originality of our sound and being on the forefront of hip-hop evolution.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
As far as starting out in music, it’s not so much where you are as what’s happening within. But once you have your sound and know what you want, LA is such an incredible city for music. The opportunities are endless and the creative atmosphere is super inspiring.
