Meet Viktorija Pashuta of BASIC Magazine in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Viktorija Pashuta.

Viktorija, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I remember starting my very first attempts at photography at age of 16 when I started taking pictures of my younger sister in Latvia (where I am originally from). We used to play dress up and create fantasy characters and document it on camera.

I believe that In order to create compelling fashion images in most cases you don’t really need expensive gear, connections or super models. It is more about your vision and a keen eye. I’ve seen so many photographers focusing too much on the latest cameras, or technical aspects of editing and lighting that sometimes they forget what are they trying to say with an image. Photography is an art form – and first and foremost it should focus on the story and the idea. That’s when I had realized that I want to spend more time on prepping the ideas and working on the concepts. Since then, after doing fashion photography for about 8 years after dozens of celebrity shoots, awards and publications I have decided to take it a step further and create a visual publication BASIC magazine. After 4 months of planning, we have released our first print issue themed BASIC Instinct featuring on two covers Vampire Diaries star Kat Graham, and fashion influencer Josh Mario John. Since then, we have expanded to 22 countries worldwide and 600 Barnes & Noble stores across the USA.

Has it been a smooth road?
If it is a smooth road, where is the fun of driving?

We’d love to hear more about your business.
BASIC magazine got known for creative viral projects that gained us so much buzz online and in print. One of our favorite projects was WHAT IF CARS WERE SUPERMODELS – http://basic-magazine.com/what-if-cars-were-supermodels/ where we gathered under one rooftop 12 renowned models and imagined what would have happened if cars as if under the enchanted spell would turn into real Women. The post gained more than half a million views just on our website.

We have also created a fun Mixed Media Fashion Project called DOLLZ.
http://basic-magazine.com/dollz-fashion-mixed-media-project-by-viktorija-pashuta/ where we combined fashion illustrations, crafts, fashion, and photography.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely. LA-La-La land is the place of numerous possibilities and opportunities. Coming from Europe, I can assure that even though fashion market is highly saturated here, creatives in LA have way more opportunities to achieve their dreams.

Speaking of fashion magazines – it is a highly competitive market, there is always space for perfection. I believe content is king and as long as it stays relevant and entertaining, any publication can survive and profit. With BASIC, we featured many interesting characters, like millinery designer from UK Victoria Grant, World’s Sexiest Vet Dr. Evan Antin, fashion photographer Thom Kerr, doll makers Popvy Sisters to name a few and we see the spike of interest from our readers as we provide them with the content they will not be able to find online.
