Meet Barry Moore of Getmoorefitness in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barry Moore.

Barry, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I left the corporate world in May 26, 2000 as the District Service Manager for LA Metro for American Honda Motor Company. Always a fitness enthusiast, I had just completed shooting a commercial for BowFlex as a spokesmodel and there I had the interest to build a boutique personal training business in Long Beach. I used my corporate training and business principles to guide me to ultimately where the business is today – eventually encouraging my beautiful wife to join me.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Realizing I was competing against the big box gyms at the time, namely 24 hour Fitness I had my work cut out for me. I decided to build the business on relationships and started immediately by connecting with my kid’s network as they just beginning elementary school at the time. This meant being open to crafting classes around stay at home moms, teachers, sports teams, and PTA auctions. I wanted to build a business of referrals to keep my advertising costs to a minimum as well as they were far more reliable than direct mail. It took about 2 1/2 years to really gain traction, but we were able to survive the Great Recession and that means a lot as a boutique personal service business.

Please tell us about Getmoorefitness.
We (my wife Nicole and I) are a private personal/group training service offering the best in health and fitness anywhere in the industry. Our passion for life bleeds through everything we do, and we value every client as they become family. Our job is more than educating people about nutrition and exercise, it’s coaching them to believe in their own self worth and dignity which ignites their internal flame to live their best life. I think we draw the most pride when a client recognizes they’ve been silencing their voice and decides life is too short to live like that anymore. Weight loss, building athletic performance, etc. are great yet when you see the light in their eyes finally turned on – priceless. Oh, of course it’s always magical when a high school athlete commits to play in college that always leaves me on the verge of tears.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Not a damn thing. People no longer know how to grind it out, work hard, get dirty, and live on the edge. Like in sports, it takes going through the drought of not winning the championship to shift an organization to build a winning culture. That takes time. We live in a 5G world where results are instant. I’m old school, show your work and turn in the scratch paper for full credit. This way when you finally win the championship it tastes that much sweeter.

Barry is my son-in-law and he has worked hard to get where he is today. Growing up for him was not easy. Things were not just handed to him he had to earn his way to become the man he is today. Both my husband and I are very proud to call him our son.
