Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Poynter.
Barbara, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The best place to start is the year 2018. I had just given birth to my fourth child after an extremely difficult pregnancy. I was searching for my purpose in life. I was 34 married with four children and although I had accomplished a lot in life, I felt I was not fully living up to my potential or walking in my purpose.
A good friend of mine Kristen R. Harris was relaunching a program she started called The Birthing Plan. It’s a six-week intensive program designed to help women push out their dreams and start to live life and walk within their purpose. Upon completing that program, I had renewed confidence within myself, I knew exactly what I wanted to do and had a specific blueprint on how to go about moving forward and walking in my purpose.
My purpose is simple, it’s to motivate and inspire others to get to know Christ. I accomplish this purpose in many ways by Public Speaking, sharing my testimony, and all the things I have been through and overcome due to my faith. I have overcome alcoholism, homelessness, abuse, I was a high-school dropout and became a mother at the age of 16. I’m now an entrepreneur, published author, wife, mother, homeowner, college graduate, and healthy. My firstborn son is now 20, completed high school, attending college part-time, and working. He has no children and has never been arrested. I live out my purpose by serving others and God, and being an active member of my community. I’m becoming the change I want to see. I want to see a united and equal community that is not bound by systemic biases. I serve the youth, the elderly, and the homeless in my community. I helped organize and start an emergency food box ministry through my church Christian Neighbors Church, we deliver non-perishable food boxes to the elderly, homeless, and anyone in need throughout the Lake County, IL area. I’m also a teachers assistant in our youth ministry at CNC, I assist teaching our youth the word of God. I invest in my community through my small family-owned business, BloodSweat Apparel. My absolute most fulfilling way to serve others and God is through writing. I love to write, I published my first book on May 1, 2020, it’s titled Letting Go of What’s Holding You Back: A 10-Day devotional inspiring you to let go and trust God. Impacted by everything happening in the world right now, I have been inspired to pen two new books. A free e-book of letters of love to Black Men and the African American Community and another Devotional, Men uplifting Man.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing worth having or doing will every be easy. I have had several bumps in the road along my journey. Being a wife, mother, and still working a full-time job in addition to running a small business, time can become the enemy. By the grace of God, time management, and organizational skills, I have been blessed to accomplish many things along the way and I’m trusting God to smooth out any bumps in the road that’s ahead of me.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about BloodSweat Apparel and Letting Go of What’s Holding You Back – what should we know?
BloodSweat Apparel is an inspirational clothing and accessories company that inspires everyone to flaunt their faith. Some of our top sellers are “Trust God”, “God Got Me” and “Faith over Fear” shirts. For every shirt we sell, we donate one to the homeless.
Letting Go of Holding You Back is a 10 day devotional inspiring you to let go and trust God. Letting Go of the past can be difficult. Past trauma and pain can be debilitating which can lead to fear. I was inspired to write #LGOWHYB after taking a journey with God to explore my own fears and their origin. After going on this revealing journey with God, I was inspired to get others unstuck and motivate them to lean into their faith, Trust God and start to move forward fearlessly.
I’m most proud of the community support and that we celebrated our One year Anniversary on May 1, 2020, the same day I became a published author for the first time. I’m proud that being a small business, we are able to sustain even during the Covid-19 Era by the Grace of God.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
God, nothing is possible without him.
I have to give credit to my Husband Jacorey Jenkins. He has always accepted me for who I am with all of my flaws. He also sacrificed many hours of sleep and time to himself, putting things he wanted to do on the back burner so that I can live in my purpose and accomplish my dreams. He is my biggest fan and number one supporter.
Kristen R. Harris – because she chose to be obedient to God’s calling for her life. She has helped many women including myself achieve their purpose through her programs The Birthing Plan and The Scribe Tribe.
My Children – Coreyone, Leonta, Derionna, and Jacorey Jr. they motivate me to become great. They make me want to live my life on purpose.
