Meet Bama Mattson of Sixth & Co. in Huntington Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bama Mattson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Bama. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My best friend, Amanda, has severe wanderlust – on one of her tours around the world, she spotted a towel that folded up with a strap. She suggested bringing the towel stateside and creating our own version. The idea sparked a vision within me of a carryall that doubles as a blanket. I love those beautiful colorful Mexican blankets and the vibe that they represent seemed to be the perfect fit: laid back, functional, stylish, and accessible. Amanda and I are friends and now business partners and we also represent the extreme demographics of the blanket bag user: I’m a working mom that lives between the beach and the skate park and she has a profession that requires spontaneous travel and needs an easy bag that doubles as a blanket. For the first prototype, I cut up one blanket and sewed it to another blanket and then we high fived and we were in business. My son, Waylon, is our biggest fan and best helper, and he and Amanda and I share the same birthday: July 6th (the respective years are none of your business) so we came up with the name Sixth & Co. Two years later, we’re operating out of my son’s bedroom aka our independent studio space sewing up a colorful fabric storm. We travel to art shows and we sell online. We’re hustling but the word of mouth response has been incredible. Everyone wants a bag and knows someone who needs a bag. The patterns and colors are universally appealing and don’t show wear and tear easily. The blanket bags have a reversible zipper and come with a detachable, water-resistant, bag that’s the perfect size for your keys, phone, etc. – you can go surfing in San Onofre or crowd surfing at Coachella with the same bag or keep it mellow with a picnic at the park, that’s why we say: “Wake up and play outside”.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As with any small business, we’ve encountered challenges. How do even start a new business? You just hold your breath and dive in. We’ve done extremely well for relying solely on word of mouth and social media advertising. I’m incredibly proud of the results of our hard work and determination. These days our challenges are keeping up with demand and also increasing exposure. We have this really cool & functional item that we feel like everyone needs – we want to get it to them.

Please tell us about Sixth & Co.
We repurpose blankets into our rad blanket bag. Our bag unrolls into a blanket or our blanket rolls up into a bag. There’s a reversible zipper so you can throw your stuff back in when it’s open as a blanket, like: did someone say pillow? it also comes with a small detachable water-resistant bag that’s big enough for your keys, cell phone, etc. We also make purses, clutches, coin purses, pillows. Lately, we’ve been refreshing vintage military jackets with personalized sayings and super fresh blanket linings.
