Meet B. Lin Murphy of The Bawdy Filter in DTLA and Sherman Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to B. Lin Murphy.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Born and raised in south Chicagoland, I knew early on that my life’s path would be one of my own creation. I have always been industrious and live to make the most out of what’s available to me and aspire to inspire others by modeling determination, integrity, and humility. I attended Florida A&M University and earned a business degree in 2008. To prepare for the many facets of entrepreneurship, I worked in accounting and finance by day and attended law school at night.

In 2016, not long after I completed law school, my family moved from Indianapolis to Los Angeles and I continued to work in financial management for AT&T. While working for AT&T, I launched Bittyrina and began my career as a professional innovator. Now, I run three businesses, have authored three children’s books, and work in innovation for one of the world’s largest brands. My personal mission in life, in every capacity, is to solve problems through compulsive experimentation and creation.

I wear so many hats. As you can imagine, my days consist of extreme multi-tasking. One of my companies, Bittyrina, is dedicated to developing gear and resources for active kids to help parents keep them moving. We design and manufacture dancewear with children with sensory sensitivities, like my 7-year-old daughter, in mind. I’ve spent years developing a patent-pending leotard and use high-quality fabrics to ensure a comfortable fit. In the midst of this search for the right fit and fabrics for bittyrinas, I could not help but want a versatile, comfy garment for myself.

I surfed the web and browsed Amazon for days, but could not find a sturdy “all you need” outfit that could be worn in a variety of instances. The garment I needed had to be supportive, comfortable, and durable. I wanted a one-step ‘fit because some mornings I simply do not have time to find out which jeans are clean and which shirt isn’t wrinkled. I invented the bawdy filter, a selective compression bodysuit, to make getting dressed easier for women like me. The five different bawdy filter styles were created to take the stress out of getting dressed.

Every woman could use and deserves a dynamic staple that considers her curves—and the curve balls that life is known to throw. The Bawdy Filter’s patent-pending bodysuits will help women address their most pressing needs in an unfamiliar climate. The emergence of COVID-19 has unimaginably changed the lives of women around the world. However, some things never change.

I designed each bodysuit, using a size 8 sample size, to lift and accentuate natural beauty. Their unique design cinches the waist and limits jiggles. Some of the bodysuits include built-in shapewear, and every garment features sturdy, gentle compression to minimize unwanted bumps and dents. A key feature of each garment is the high-quality, anti-microbial fabric. It is not see-through and doesn’t bead after being washed. I’m a stickler for quality, and I created the bawdy filter to exceed my own high standards.

The Bawdy Filter’s collection includes five versatile styles in a variety of colors, each designed and manufactured in Los Angeles using hand-picked materials.

In addition to providing a blend of functionality and fashion with the novel bodysuits, our brand provides customers with the opportunity to donate a portion of their purchase to their favorite non-profit. We are currently researching nonprofits to partner with and it’s exciting to consider that The Bawdy Filter can support the global community physically and literally.

Has it been a smooth road?
I can’t imagine that any road worth traveling is smooth. A bumpy road keeps the traveler alert and aware that we can only control so much. The bumps are reminders that keeping your eyes on the road isn’t enough, and you have to brace yourself for life’s unexpected jerks and pulls.

As an entrepreneur, you have to be your own biggest fan. Without confidence in yourself and your ability to serve unmet needs, you do not stand a chance. The most threatening bumps in the road for entrepreneurs are moments of self-doubt. Once you are able to brace for those inevitable bumps of self-doubt, the other bumps seem much smoother.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Bawdy Filter story. Tell us more about the business.
I own three businesses – Bittyrina, The Bitty Bouq Bar, and The Bawdy Filter.

Bittyrina is a brand for active kids. We manufacture wholesale dancewear and activewear. I’ve authored “The Very First” book series for Bittyrina. It walks readers through “very first” experiences to address the nervousness and anxiety that beginners must overcome to become experts. The first book of the series is accessible on our mobile app, The Bittyrina App. It also features dance terminology flashcards and a workbook with goal charting.

The Bitty Bouq Bar is a mobile trinket and bouquet pop-up shop. We partner with organizations like schools and dance studios to celebrate and encourage children after their proudest moments. I love The Bitty Bouq Bar because I get the opportunity to help supporters celebrate their little ones’ major accomplishments.

After a fruitless search on the internet for a one-step outfit, I launched The Bawdy Filter, featuring comfortable, wearable compression designed to ease busy days for dynamic women. I am proud when I hear that a bawdy filter helped another woman feel more empowered to get sh*t done, all because getting dressed was 10 times easier.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
COVID-19 has shaken so much up. My answer to this question, however, remains the same. In the consumer goods and e-commerce industries, consumers want to connect products with purpose. As we all become more grounded and more enlightened, we want to do good by ourselves, our families, our community… the global community. This means that we feel more empowered when we purchase from companies that are focused on doing the same.
