Today we’d like to introduce you to Azana Serene Williams.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I always said I wanted to be a designer. For me, the best fashion was always glamorous, elegant, dramatic, or all three at once. In 2015, when I received the opportunity to study at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM), I was completely taken with designers like Monique Lhuillier and the art of creating such timeless pieces. It was through my time at FIDM that I gained more understanding of the industry and how I wanted to be involved. Over the course of my studies, I earned an Associates of Arts Degree in Fashion Design, an Advanced Associates of Arts Degree in International Manufacturing & Product Development, and a Bachelors of Science Degree in Business Management. After graduating in December, in February of 2019, I took the leap to establish my own company, Azana Serene Incorporated.
I was always clear that my career would revolve around fashion and that, one day, Azana Serene would become synonymous with high fashion and classic elegance. From binge watching Say Yes to the Dress, to familiarizing myself with the design and production processes at FIDM, I was committed to developing my brand. All along the way, I have been very blessed to have the support of the family and friends around me.
My experiences in the fashion industry thus far have only encouraged me to keep going; to stay committed to my vision and be willing to do the hard work to have a long-term impact in the fashion community. For now, it is about embracing the process and being open to growth.
Please tell us about your art.
I am the designer of the ready-to-wear women’s brand Azana Serene. Nothing inspires me quite like old romance and powerful women across various time periods. The first collection from Azana Serene, A Glimpse of Her, was released in February of 2019 with a focus on the classic silhouettes and strong women. It holds hints of glamour and femininity that keep with the disposition of the brand. I love this collection because it was a perfect, and very subtle, beginning for the Azana Serene. It is very soft spoken and reminds me of more simple, yet classic, evening gowns. I was inspired by fabrics like velvet and charmeuse to create very fine and timeless looks. Putting together this collection was a great experience.
Now, as I look to producing my next collection, launching in August of 2019, I am beyond excited to share what I have been working on once again. I am continuously fascinated with the story that a beautiful gown can express; what fashion can say that goes beyond words. I continue to fall in love with the work of other fashion designers and the way they impact that fashion community. I look forward to building my own brand that speaks volumes in the same way and being able to learn from their experiences.
As a designer, I want to share my vision for fashion and empower women through my designs. I create designs that are reminiscent of past times and celebrate special moments. Azana Serene is for women who are or will be iconic, and with each collection, I hope to bring these women joy.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I’d have to say success is rooted the ability to persevere; if you are willing to take the risk and fail, then you can only find success on the other side. I can say for myself that it is easy to get fixed on everything that is going wrong at any given time or all the heights you have yet to reach; sometimes all you see is how far away you are from your goal. However, especially as an artist, I’ve found that it is important to embrace your position without comparing it to anyone else. My faith in God had played a big role in my understanding that what is for me, will be, and though I can’t always see it, those are the times when we must dig the deepest.
I think success cannot be defined in just one way, and it looks different for everyone. I believe the key is in where we put in the work, being able to push through, and hold fast to the reason we started the journey.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
