Today we’d like to introduce you to Axel Perez.
Axel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Living as today’s youth, life can get confusing at times. I constantly found myself becoming more and more disappointed with the current “influencers” on social media who we were expected to have as role models. It’s easy to say that these “influencers” weren’t providing proper guidance to their audience and instead are producing content with the mindset of money and views.
Seeing this lack of positivity and content that was relatable, I decided to make that change. I took it upon myself to be the person I was looking for. I realized that my position in life allowed me to help others. Being a leadership student and having overcome many things in life, like bullying, I believed that I could help people based on my story and my passion for inspiring others and building a better community.
Throughout middle and high school I have been involved in leadership and my own club H.E.R.O. (Helping Everyone Respect Others) These clubs helped me grow as a young individual and helped me find myself and my passion which is what sparked the interest of being involved and wanting to provide support and help for others.
It was at this time when I knew that finally, I wanted to take things to a bigger level and listen to what my heart was telling me to do. Wanting to go forward and proceed with the idea of helping and inspiring others was one thing but actually making it happen was another. I was quickly lost on how I could reach people and make an impact. I struggled to find a platform to start off on until I made my debut on THE HARBOR by Jostens.
THE HARBOR is a video series facilitating the teaching of character development in classrooms by showcasing tangible life lessons with rich, raw and engaging video content. On the show, I was able to talk about my story for a platform of student leaders across the nation. This was the kick off! After being on the show, I felt more connected and more passionate about sharing my story.
The feedback from my episode was amazing from friends and family supporting me to random people telling me how inspirational my story was and how my story resonated with them. I felt the need to continue and help touch more people. After experimenting with different platforms, I became appealed to the idea of a podcast.
I began research on how to start a podcast searching up information on google and watching videos on YouTube until I finally figured it out. I launched my podcast on April 26th, 2018 with my very first ever episode, “ANXIETY.” I didn’t know what to expect or how to feel. I felt nervous, happy and excited to announce a big step in my career but the reaction left me speechless.
Everyone loved the launch of Simply Axel (formerly known as This Teenage Life) and instantly it was being shared across listeners social media, and we began to grow as a community. It was taking simple topics and discussing them or starting the conversation which was important to the listeners and me.
Posting episodes biweekly about the topics I feel are important to the youth and need to be addressed became a favorite. Focusing on mental health, self-care, love, and my personal options Simply Axel became a hit. After months of running the podcast and it turned out successful I branched out and started Empower Org, a movement focusing on the same goal but with a live audience.
Empower gives me the opportunity to take the podcast and make a live version of it with similar topics and custom lessons for each audience. It’s one on one learning with an interactive presentation. With audiences like students, teachers and the general community, I am able to grow my audience and reach of help to others.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road at all. Having made it this far has been a challenge. In this industry, it’s not every day that you see a teenager making a positive movement, and it’s been tough making it without others thinking less of me and my work. Being young it’s harder for people to take you seriously but keeping the passion, dedication, and purpose in mind is very important.
Growing as an individual and maturing has also made a significant influence. Being expected to be a role model and find myself along the way is a difficult task to complete. Going through my teenage years, I have experienced love, friendships, heartbreak and betrayal which has gotten very tough. Eventually, you reach a time where you need to step back and take time for yourself.
I always like to make sure I am in the correct mindset to be reasonable, that sometimes means taking time to myself. I take that time because I want to be healthy and produce the best content for my audience in the best way. Don’t get me wrong there is times where I do talk about what I’m currently going through because I know I’m not the only one.
But there’s certain things you have to experience alone as an individual and later come back to them once you have fully matured and understood the situation taking the positive and lessons from what may have happened. I think that’s the hardest part, knowing how to draw the line and separate your mental health and your personal life from your work or influence to others.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Simply Axel Podcast – what should we know?
Simply Axel is a podcast, an event series and a community that connects and empowers through personal journey. My team and I create content that other youth can tune in and relate to. Most kids feel alone going through obstacles encountered in life. Typically, kids feel alone when facing difficult obstacles.
In result, they blame these obstacles on themselves. The podcast provides a safe space for kids to feel safe, understood and comfortable. As an individual, me and the podcast are known for helping others and empowering through kindness and support. As part of the podcast team, I believe in inspiring those to seek self-discovery.
Sharing my story and how I also struggled and overcame many of my personal curveballs is what sets us apart from others and shows how the content we produce is real and not scripted or lightly told. I make sure that my content is raw and as relatable as possible, discussing the topics mainstream media does not openly cover.
The content from the episodes are fully based on my personal experiences, opinions, and beliefs which is important because my audience can find episodes significant, especially the episodes they most resemble to.
Being a part of modern youth and actually knowing how certain things affect us and how we tend to feel over different subjects is what makes us likable.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The qualities and characteristics I feel are most important to my success is being open to feedback. It’s important to receive feedback from your audience and be open to using that feedback to better your content and yourself as an individual.
