Meet Avik Bose

Today we’d like to introduce you to Avik Bose.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I hear a lot of people say they wanted to be an actor or part of the industry since they were a kid. That wasn’t the case for me. I wanted to play sports but living in Mumbai, a city where everyone wants to be in the industry just like Los Angeles, I got curious about it. I started focusing on the movies and television and the process of making them more deeply. The more I understood the work the more I fell in love with it.

So by the age of 15, I had made up my mind to be an actor. In the meantime, I started dancing for the biggest dance company in India which gave me even more exposure to the industry and also a chance to travel. Though Bollywood is huge opportunities for people like us ‘who do not have families and godfathers in the industry, is extremely limited and next to impossible. After graduating high school, I decided to come to the biggest film and Tv industry in the world: Hollywood. Due to lack of finance, I could not afford NYU or UCLA. I chose New York film academy which was the next best option in 2014, I learned a lot. I studied and learned in classes outside school as well. I learned a lot about the work in Hollywood and its quality. I learned the culture and ethics. I learned that nepotism here is not even close to what it is in Bollywood. So I fell in love with the industry even more. I decided to stay back here since I was lucky enough to constantly go through agents and managers since graduation. I have been able to take a step forward always. Though opportunities for my ethnicity and looks are limited, I have been lucky enough to knock on most of the big doors. I am still struggling in the industry but the accomplishments till now as well as the feedbacks, give me a lot of confidence to keep positive and moving forward. I know the right opportunity will present itself and I will be ready for it.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I do not have a background in the industry plus I am a foreigner so yes, the struggle is real and ongoing. Opportunities for people like us is not as much as you would hope for but I will say I was lucky enough to have every season filled with multiple auditions and callbacks from studios and independent castings. Balancing a job for survival and preparing for auditions and acting is never easy. There will be obstacles for sure. But you have to make sure you know what your priority is. Living by yourself with no family or loved ones around, struggling financially most times and trying to stay mentally strong and physically ready to be there for the right opportunities and capitalize on them is the biggest struggle of them all.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
What makes me different is I feel I am one of the few who has given up everything in life to chase my dream. Left my country, loved ones, friends. So there is a lot of sacrifice and pain. There is no ‘give up’. There is no moving on to something new. When you leave everything for something then you know how much you want it and how much it means to you. I have decided never to give up and keep fighting till I make it.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I am stubborn in a good way and hardworking. What I want I give my 100% to get it. I have one goal and it is going to stay that way till I achieve it. Nothing and no one can sway me away from that path.
