Today we’d like to introduce you to Avgust Reign.
Avgust, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve loved everything creative since I was a little girl. I grew up dancing singing and playing the flute in a small town in Maryland. My initial goal was to actually go to Julliard and be in the American Ballet. However, as I got older I realized I was super into fashion and ended up going to The Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC for college. During my senior year of school, I decided to seriously give music a go and started taking voice lessons, teaching myself how to produce and everything. I’m really fascinated by learning new things so I was obsessed with throwing myself into it headfirst. After I graduated college last summer, I put out my first single and EP called Delusions of Grandeur. It was received pretty well and it helped to get the ball rolling for me. From there, I started releasing more singles and performing live around NYC which was an amazing experience for me and I loved it.
Fast forward to now, I decided to move to LA in April of this year to help further my music career. When I first started in NYC I was really just doing it all on my own which thinking about it now kinda made it harder to figure out my sound. Now I have a really amazing producer and engineers in both NYC and LA that I’m super comfortable with and everything is going in a really solid direction. My new EP “Grey Matter” is dropping this Fall and it’s way more of who I am as a person. I’m super proud of it and can’t wait for everyone to hear it.
Has it been a smooth road?
October this year will mark two years since I started doing music, It definitely hasn’t been an easy road especially being a woman in this industry, I’m constantly in rooms with pretty much all men which can be intimidating. In the beginning, it was definitely bumpy trying to find studios I liked and producers. You end up wasting a lot of money doing this when you’re an independent artist and it can get discouraging but, once I got my groove it was really amazing.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I’m Avgust Reign, a singer/songwriter now based out of LA. I would describe my sound as a fusion between alternative pop and r&b with a jazzy underbelly. I pull a lot of inspiration from the music I heard growing up like Sade, Prince, and Earth Wind and Fire. But I’m also super influenced by artists who shaped my teens like Frank Ocean, Banks, and Lana Del Rey. Overall I just want to create art that evokes emotions and connects to people. As of right now, I’m definitely most proud of the recent music I’ve put out. My newest single “6ix” is my favorite one so far and it really sets the tone for the entire project dropping this Fall.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely! I started out in NYC which is super brutal to begin with but also really inspiring because everyone is always moving. Since being in LA, I’ve definitely connected with more people in a short amount of time and found my footing. If someone was starting out in the music industry, I think LA would be a perfect place to be. There’s a lot of young creatives here and everyone is always down to collaborate, it’s amazing energy.
