Meet Austin Roberts of Uninterrupted in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Roberts.

Austin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Starting with post-grad from UCLA, I went on to play a season for the Los Angeles Chargers before suffering a career-ending knee injury. After that, I went through a period of feeling hopeless and lost since all I knew was the game of football. Fortunately, I was blessed to have made a connection to current Uninterrupted employee and influencer Andrew Hawkins, and he has played a very large part in guiding me through the early part of my post-playing career. Through him, I landed a great internship at one of the best sports content companies in the city, Uninterrupted. After my time with them, I began and currently am looking for a career within the respective field.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road honestly started off a smooth as it could’ve been. Going from a great university such as UCLA straight to the NFL is as good as it gets. However once the injuries started to pile up, and when I had to leave my dream job so soon, that’s when I started to really doubt myself for the first time in my adult life. I was worried about how I would get a company to take a chance on a young man who lacks real-world work experience. Thankfully I was in a position where I didn’t need to find a job right away but seeing all my peers outside of sports securing great jobs while I did nothing was definitely frustrating to say the least.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
My role at Uninterrupted while I was there, was known as the ‘Pro Athlete Intern” and rather than being assigned to a respective department such as marketing, branding or production, I had the freedom to help out in areas that I was interested in. I eventually found myself working mainly with the athlete relations team who specializes with finding athletes with stories that need to be told as well as cultivating said stories into media segments that are appealing to consumers. I was a good fit for this department because of my NFL background as well as my outgoing personality. I was able to utilize the knowledge I gained while playing to help the athlete relations team gain better insight on how to conduct business with athletes and also on how they could produce better content.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that Los Angeles is the media hub of the west coast. The number of large media companies that are based here is astounding, there are opportunities everywhere if you work hard enough. Outside of the work world, LA has some of the best beaches in the country and I happen to find myself spending most of my time relaxing on the sand. And obviously I dislike the traffic, I don’t think anyone is a fan of that.
