Meet Austin Belisle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Belisle.

Austin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
ABD or Austin Belisle Design was born out of a need for great modern design in my surrounding communities. I didn’t see anyone really looking out for smaller “mom and pop” businesses or small up-and-coming businesses/startups when it came to logos, websites and branding in general. To dive a little deeper, I would say that I saw no one doing it on an upscale high-end level that I had envisioned in my head. It all goes back to my love for all things luxe, classic and beautiful. As a kid, I was always inquisitive and artistic, and that same creative flame burned brighter and hotter as time passed. I would question everything. I would look at a Gucci campaign and mentally dissect the art direction: “Why this location?” or “How well is the concept being translated?” I could recall going to Bath and Body Works with my mom as a kid and asking the workers where they sourced their apples for the Country Apple collection and who created their new scents for them (they never ever gave me a solid answer though, haha).

Specifically, I had come home from class one day (college), and my mom had told me that her hairstylist was in desperate need of new business cards, flyers and other marketing materials and that she had basically pitched me and my services to her stylist. I landed the project and not only was the client overjoyed, but she had gained so much new business simply because all her new marketing materials made her look “Professional and Expensive”. She had already owned one of the best hair salons in the area, but now she looked the part as well. It was the perfect pairing: beautiful service and beautiful branding. That was my first major monetary transaction and my fastest transaction to this day. That day I whispered to myself “You could really do something amazing here”. From there ABD was born and has been blossoming ever since.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I believe there will always be obstacles in any and everything we do in this thing called life. For me, one of the biggest hurdles was actually believing that I had enough talent, creativity and vision to make a name for myself in the design industry and really make change in the community. There are so many big design agencies/firms here in Los Angeles and I had to build my confidence and craft at the same time to be able to stand tall and say “I’m just as good as any other graphic designer in this city, if not better”. I have God-given talent and an unparalleled work ethic: You’ll never be able to beat that combination.

The second biggest hurdle I still encounter is balancing everything. We only get twenty-four hours each day and the majority of the time, it’s simply not enough. Trying to immerse myself in this industry, keeping up with trends and technology as they relate to the human experience, consulting with new clients, advising old clients, keeping my google calendar in order…it’s all so much and can often be overwhelming. Heading off an agency means that I am everyone and no one all at once if that makes sense. I have to oversee every sector of my agency and I cannot afford to have anything slip through the cracks.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Austin Belisle Design story. Tell us more about the business.
ABD is a design agency catering to all the design-related needs of businesses, firms, start-ups, etc. We specialize in telling luxurious brand stories through graphic design, branding, visual language and creative direction. Essentially we differentiate brands to thrive in the competitive landscape of business. This can range from a slightly refreshed logo for a company, all the way to a full-on brand makeover.

ABD is known for its modern, edgy, simplistic, luxurious design aesthetic. We explore the DNA of a company or business and translate those components visually in the most minimal yet impactful ways.

I’m most proud of creating a professional visual hub for all of my creativity: a place where people can go to learn more about who I am as a designer and visionary. ABD is a small peek into my mind and how it operates. It’s a place to share my strong point-of-view as an artist and how I see the world. On top of that, I get to share my art with people all over the world and inspire them.

One of the biggest things that sets ABD apart from other design firms and agencies is its boldness and ability to see into the future. I’m extremely bold, unapologetic and fearless in my personal life, and I try to bring those same qualities to my agency. By unapologetic I simply mean being firm in belief in relation to all my artistic endeavors and decisions. Interesting color palettes, edgy logos, minimalist aesthetics, we tap into it all. We build extremely tight and personal bonds and relationships with our clients which then allows us to extract all the necessary information for building a strong and long-lasting brand. We are always thinking about how the brand will evolve over time. Longevity is always the name of the game here at ABD.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
It goes beyond “luck” for me. You’re looking at years of hard work and sacrifice accompanied by prayer and a strong faith in God. You’re looking at some someone who immerses himself in all things design and technology-driven. You’re looking at someone who sleeps 4-5 hours a night, max. Forget luck! How qualified and knowledgeable are you in your “area of expertise”? How dedicated are you to your craft? What are you willing to sacrifice in order to obtain your dream? What are you doing all of this for? What’s the end goal? Luck means nothing if you’re not prepared for the opportunity placed in front of you, and if you can’t answer these simple questions, take a step back and regroup. It’s foundational. It’s internal. It has to be meaningful.

Take the idea of “luck” out of the equation and replace that with the concept of “preparation meets confidence”.

Be so good that they can’t ignore you. That’s my mantra. I solely focused on improving my design and critical thinking skills and tuned out the rest of the world. The blessings, respect and clients followed shortly thereafter and here are we: my own design agency years later!

Good things come to those who wait, but great things come to those who get their a** up and get moving.

Go for it all. There are no limits.
