Meet Auriana Spencer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Auriana Spencer.

Hi Auriana, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In May 2015, my husband and I both finished college in Fresno and were trying to find jobs. We lived in a small apartment with our daughter who was about three at the time. While we were applying to jobs, we still needed money to pay our rent and bills so we tried thinking of ways to earn an income without the traditional 9-5. We originally started a clothing line with an old screen printing press that my dad had been keeping in his garage in Los Angeles. We took the machine back up north to Clovis where we lived and started printing shirts for people not only in the city but all over California and the United States.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road for us. We grew up learning and believing that college was necessary in order to start and succeed at your career. We had to shift our frame of thinking and create our own blueprint that allowed us to believe that going the entrepreneurship/business owner route was not just a dream. What helped shift our frame of thinking was seeing results from our business. Once we got our very first clients who trusted us to serve them we saw how our business could expand. Other challenges we have faced were learning how to market the business, learning how to correspond with clients efficiently, learning how to print properly and a lack of capital to get our business to scale. Obviously, these struggles did not stop us and what helped was our marriage/partnership and us being on the same page with where we wanted the business to take us. When one of us felt discouraged, the other was there to inspire.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve been an artist for as far back as I can remember. I grew up illustrating my own stories, drawing cartoon characters, painting, and video editing. I’ve always wanted to make art for a living so running a business where I create logos, edit designs and screen print t-shirts is the ideal career for me. I now specialize in creating digital artwork by using Photoshop and I also draw different kinds of designs from scratch.

What sets us apart is the teamwork and commitment my husband and I have for our business. We got where we are today because of the enthusiasm we both share. It isn’t just one of us whose putting their blood, sweat and tears into growing the business while the other just supports from the sidelines. Support from your spouse who’s not actively helping to build the business shouldn’t be underestimated, but imagine if two people shared the same vision. My husband and I share the same vision so we both have the same identity as owners who not only put in overtime whenever necessary but nurture the business as well. If I ever bring up ideas of other services our business can provide or if he thinks of ways to make things run in a more organized and efficient way then we eagerly engage with one another. We let each other know our thoughts on those ideas and communicate until we come to a solution. Sometimes we may disagree on things, but we overcome that challenge by simply comprising or just testing both ideas out. We’re learning that consistency and discipline is what keeps us going whether we’re feeling inspired or exhausted and we want others to be inspired as well.
