Meet Aunny De La Rosa-Bathe and Amy De La Rosa of Clean Beauty Group in Culver City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aunny De La Rosa-Bathe and Amy De La Rosa.

Aunny and Amy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always loved makeup. I had a babysitter who was a total Ska Girl – she would wear bright red lipstick, drove a hot pink Karmann Ghia, and worked at Winchell’s Donuts. She couldn’t have been cooler to me. She definitely sparked my interest in makeup.

I graduated from college with a degree in Public Relations so I’ve worked as a Communications professional in pretty much every environment from Corporate Communications to consulting maining for technology startups. I got my first job at a PR/Digital Marketing agency in Century City during the height of the dot com bubble in 2000. I was also there when the bubble burst. I was one of over 20 young 20 somethings who were laid off after we lost half of our client roster in 2001. It was then that I decided to go to makeup school and give it a go full time.

I’ve worked for huge cosmetics brands and high end salons as an artist, manager, and instructor. I love the creativity involved in makeup but I am also a natural born educator and take a lot of pride in my ability to teach technical skills as well as sharing knowledge around why products perform the way they do.

About ten years ago I started to take a closer look at the type of ingredients in my personal care products while living in France with my father and step-mother. I loved the simplicity of their lifestyle and it inspired me to make some changes in my own way of life. Upon returning to the states I started to transition my personal makeup kit over to clean brands but the market did not have a lot to offer at the time.

In the last three years, there has been a huge upswing in clean beauty and the brands that have entered the market are not only clean but perform at the level of some of the legacy brands we have stocked in our kits for years. It’s been a process but we have spent a lot of time curating our professional makeup kits with products that we have thoroughly tested and believed in.

Amy: I’ve always been interested on makeup. I have two older sisters and a mom who was always very put together, so watching them get ready always interested me. I also watched a lot of old movies growing up and love the old Hollywood glamour.

When it came time to choose a career I thought about what made me happy and I kept coming back to makeup. I attended Empire Academy of Makeup founded by Donna Mee from 2004-2005 and that was a HUGE step in the right direction for me. It was really like a makeup bootcamp, the education and and techniques I learned there have really helped me develop my style and knowledge as an artist and I think having that foundation is what has helped set me apart as an artist. From there I worked retail for a few years and then that led to doing weddings and photoshoots. But when I moved to Hollywood is when I started expanding into TV, print, private clients, and more stylized photo shoots.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
With any trend, the market has quickly become saturated with brands that have jumped on the clean beauty bandwagon and have taken “greenwashing” to a new level. It is for that reason that Amy and I saw a need for more education around what is truly clean and what is being marketed as clean. As part of our services, we offer makeup lessons but there is a certain amount of education in any makeup application we do because our clients are curious about the exciting new brands we use.

A challenge for us is that because a lot of these new clean beauty companies are boutique brands their products are not mass produced but rather made in small batches using only the highest caliber of clean ingredients. This naturally impacts costs to the consumer making it only accessible to those who have the means to go clean which we think is unfair and unfortunate. The makeup we have in our kits has a premium attached to it because it is not as affordable as conventional makeup you can buy in drug stores or department stores.

It is for this reason that we have to plan ahead as much as possible because if we run out of our favorite products we can’t just go to the store to restock on the fly. We know that this will change but it will take more people adopting clean beauty practices until we see clean beauty really hit its tipping point and become more widely available.

Amy: Like any career there are ups and downs, in this industry you have to be a chameleon in whatever situation you’re thrown into.

Although we’ve seen major progress, there are definitely still hurdles to overcome in the Clean Beauty space. One is the affordability factor. We hope that as more people adopt greener lifestyle choices that nontoxic makeup choices are added into their mix.

We do a product of the week on our instagram @cleanbeautygroup to highlight some of the products we absolutely love as a way to make it easier for People to find clean beauty alternatives. We believe everyone, no matter their socio economic background should have access to clean beauty. We’d like to believe that Clean Beauty Group is a very small part of seeing that happen in the near future.

Right now it is still somewhat difficult convincing women that clean beauty makeup offers the same results as the conventional cosmetics they’ve used for years. Even for myself, It has taken some trial and error finding comparable products to the cult favorites I’ve always used in my own kit. That’s a big reason why Clean Beauty Group exists. We have done the research to find superior clean beauty makeup on the market and done extensive product testing on ourselves and clientele in order to make realistic suggestions to our clients.

We do the hard work of searching for and discovering the truly exceptional clean makeup so that the switch is as seamless as possible for our clients. Plus we get to support the smaller, indie cosmetics lines that are developing such high quality products creating a ripple effect throughout the beauty industry. These are the true heroes of the clean beauty movement.
