Meet Audra Buras

Today we’d like to introduce you to Audra Buras.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Audra. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I was in theater, I played the saxophone, I took every drama and acting class that I could. I also modeled for twenty years (modeling is silent acting) which lead to a pent-up desire to use my voice. I have had parallel career paths in business, in academia, and, in entertainment… which I suppose explains how I teach communication classes online at a University and I am a voice actor. I landed here through a whirlwind of the arts and business. Ironically my formal introduction to entertainment came through modeling, however, the real beauty of voice-over work is that it doesn’t matter what you look like.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Yes and no, my career in education is very linear but voice-over work is not. I am constantly sending out auditions and researching new approaches to this craft, as well as, new technology and software. It is a grind. Although I try not to dwell on the struggle, I am grateful for my clients and for every single opportunity that I get.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I have voiced all kinds of television and radio commercials, promotional ads, audiobooks, internet videos, and, various corporate narrations. However, I am known for voicing political ads. I pride myself on being nonpartisan. I was hired to voice an attack ad against a candidate that I voted for and I did it out of principle. A lot of people don’t feel comfortable with religious or political content, so I guess my comfort with literally any topic sets me apart. I just try to work hard and be nice, no matter what.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I will avoid pontificating on luck as it applies to life. In business, specifically in voice-over, the artistic and professional medley of everything I had done up to that point just came together perfectly. My musical background set a strong foundation for understanding all things audio. The combination of everything I have ever done became relevant and something I could use to express emotions through my voice, whether that be walking a runway or pitching an investor. I try to utilize all of my experiences, so my various business failures and successes have given me a lot of confidence. I work hard but I also have good luck. Most recently, I was already working remote for several years before the pandemic hit — and being able to work remotely in 2020 is damn good luck.
