Meet Atilio Pernisco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Atilio Pernisco.

Atilio, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Santa Monica, California and later grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In my middle teenage years, I came back to the USA and went to the Art Center College of Design to study art when I was barely 18. Upon graduating, I worked for 15 years doing children illustrations and other products.

When the economic turmoil of 2008 hit, I resulted out of work. Holding two mortgages and daughter of six, I realized that I was in trouble, spending all of our savings and company stocks we survived for an extra year there. In 2010, I applied to get my Masters in Painting from Claremont Graduate University and later graduated with high marks in 2012 with an exemplary exhibition named being-there.

I concerted many shows since graduation and new bodies of work every year. It was a hard journey, but most of that was a great stew for the soul. I’m currently teaching art and painting smaller works. I live in a little place on top of a hill waiting to rock the painting world.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The economic debacle of 2008 left me broke but could not break me. Some people believe the spectacle, believe in mirrors! I believe to find the authentic self you are going to struggle. Alleluyah!

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I’m known for my paintings when I can finally seat-down and make it happen. It’s the easiest thing not to paint.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would fall for love again and again and again. Don’t believe in the spectacle.
