Meet Athena Brensberger of Astroathens in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Athena Brensberger.

Athena, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It started when I was 12 years old, and my best friend gave me a book on the cosmos. I was always a dancer and wanted a career in the performing arts but when I saw this book my curiosity of figuring out who we all are sparked in me and that’s what began my dedication to pursue astrophysics. I got into my high school through a vocal audition for the music department, but it turned out that school had a planetarium, which is where I began learning how to track asteroids.

This began my crossroads. I was a music major and yet pursuing this entirely new interest in the night sky. By the time I entered college the one and only school that accepted me based on my grades, happened to have an observatory. This was when I changed my major to physics, began to do research on planetary disk formations and started my years of research in astrophysics. About two years in I got scouted for America’s Next Top Model, but after going through the audition process I decided not to do the show but to instead test the waters in the modeling and fashion industry.

My career took me to contracts around the world modeling in different countries, which is when I decided to make the decision to leave school and to put on pause earning my degree. Doing that for about five years I realized I needed to find my way back to the science world. There was TOO MUCH happening in space travel and scientific discoveries that I couldn’t be involved. This is when I started my YouTube Channel, applied to NASA Social’s, started volunteering at museums and for astronomy outreach events and sure enough, the scientific community opened their doors.

I started hosting on shows with Seeker, from the Discovery Channel, and TMRO and having guest appearances on the Science Channel on shows like What on Earth? And NASA’s Unexplained Files. Now I find myself in a transition period of writing and hosting and working on developing my own company.

Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing is ever a smooth road. I’ve faced obstacles like indecisiveness, being really really bad at math and having dozens of tutors, to criticisms in the modeling industry like not being the right measurements or look.

Struggles having speech impediments, when i want to do public speaking. And wanting to pursue my dreams but not letting money define me. When you want to live a bold life, you can’t let something like money hold you down.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Science, space, art, creation, and communication are all things that make up the human existence. The science of space is what got us here in the first place, well it’s at least what explains how we formed. My company and brand focus on communicating this to the public. Through educational videos, coverage of multiple outreach events and articles on my website are what make up the science communication aspect of my business. No matter what our background is we all formed the same way, and there is a constant seeking for why we are all here.

I feel that once we all begin to explore more about the scientific explanation of these things will start to bring us closer to understanding our purpose. When you subtract government, economy, money, school systems, business, what we all are at the end of the day are biological beings with an extremely energetic essence.

My company is a work in progress, but I am so proud about the feedback that I’ve gotten from such beautiful people from around the world and the international community that I’ve built. We are meant to do life together, and through my company, I create the scientific umbrella that brings us all together.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Oh my goodness, yes! First off, for the science industry there are tons of science and innovative companies in Los Angeles. Also, there is so much nature around this area, and I feel that with more nature, more thoughts and creative flow can happen.

As for improvement, I would say let’s do more networking events where people can truly connect on a deeper level and find ways to cross-collab.
