Today we’d like to introduce you to Asja Ozen.
Asja, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Born in Atlanta, raised in LA, raised by a single mother, she always pushed me to do something I loved and would never regret. She always told me my happiness and my health was more important then anything. She knew from a young age that I would be doing Art as a career, and that is where my journey started. Over the years, my art transformed through my challenges, lessons, and victories. My challenges started at a young age seeing my mother get sicker everyday, suffering from a liver disease. I used artwork to absorb my emotions because I was unable to communicate how I felt.
This is when a lot of my work became abstract/ Contemporary. With my lessons, I learned another side of me, growing as a Black Woman. My art began to not only speak for me but for other women of color as well, I began to understand the community I belonged to. I’m now coming into my victories, where my mom has received her new liver, I am given new opportunities in my life where I try to explore my skills and capabilities to the point I am combining graphic arts to studio. Doing art is a lifestyle and what wakes me up in the morning. If I didn’t have art in my life, I wouldn’t know who I am.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
SMOOTH?!?!? Hell No lol, and I’m glad for it. If it was smooth, it wouldn’t challenge me to come out of my comfort zone. I would literally start crying if the smallest thing was wrong or I didn’t like it. Then everybody would tell me it was fire and I would be ok again. Mini mental breakdowns is a regular thing. The day of art showings I would be going crazy, running all over the place but it’s definitely worth all the BS at the end.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business comes from the heart. Every piece of artwork produced literally has me in it. Whether it was a personalized piece or something of my own. As an Aquarius, I’m a very emotional person, and I give every piece of art a feeling so that when you look at it you feel it too. You may want to cry, fight, love, feel like a Boss, etc. I feel this is what makes my work so unique!
What I’m known for is my paint splatter work on bags/clothes, digital portraits, and customized hand-painted clothing.
What were you like growing up?
I was the quiet type, I pretty much got along with everybody. Very small circle I let into my personal life, and I’m still very close to those same people. I spent a lot of my time growing up with my cousins and aunts. I was considered the “baby” out of my family generation. I was the only child and very, very, very spoiled. Everything went my way or the high way. I was told I was mean as a kid but I’m honestly the nicest person you’ll ever know!
