Meet Asif “As If !” Khan of Good Work As If ! in Mid City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Asif “As If !” Khan.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Asif “As If !”. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a first-generation Bangladeshi American born and raised in the Koreatown/Mid City section of Los Angeles. I’d prefer to identify myself as a Bang Angeleno – a Bangladeshi born and raised in Los Angeles.

Production became apart of my daily lifestyle in 2012 during my junior year of high school. This decision came about due to the circle of friends I grew up recording with temporarily discontinued their passion for music. During that time, the group of friends each had an essential piece that together would make a home recording studio setup back when I used to rap. Friends would also take turns hosting studio sessions in their parents’ homes. When losing access to resources and music driven relationships, I had to take a step back and ask myself: how am I going to keep this passion going? Making beats became the solution.

2013 bought a new opportunity to reinvent myself from six years of rapping. My production style is a strong reflection of various genres I grew up listening too. Influences were drawn from my friends sharing their playlists, especially music that was used in skateboarding and RuneScape videos on YouTube. The perks of taking on production opened my eyes of being able to write music individually. Eliminating previous factors that would slow down the process of creating when I was rapping, I excelled at a faster rate because of the accessibility I had. Fruity Loops 10 was the digital audio workspace installed onto my desktop. Opposed to spending after school hours with friends, I would stay home and stay up all night working on bettering myself as a producer.

Fast forward to seven years later, I am producing for myself, local artists, and also just released my first album, Bang America 3! It is out on all streaming platforms.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There have been difficulties that have been apparent throughout this process. Devoting time into music has often caused conflict with people in my life. The biggest battle of all was with myself, especially being in a clouded headspace. Overthinking, self-doubt, distractions, and anxiety were the biggest obstacles. They still are today, however, I am blessed to be able to handle things a lot better compared to the previous years. Note to self: Do What You Fucking Want!

Good Work As If ! – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My services are specialized in record production and project management pertaining to album development and any content that has needs for original instrumentals/ recordings. I am best known for my drum patterns and versatility amongst creating music that appeals to different genres. What I am proud of is being able to have access to various resources to further enhance content for listeners, potential fans, and offer the highest quality of authentic music to my clients. What differentiates my work from others is that my experience in music ranges beyond the creative aspects of it. Spending the last two years on administrative side of music, I have been equipped with further skillsets that allow me to take the music I help create into the field of marketing and enterprise.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me is very simple. It is to take care of your loved ones, have financial freedom, ownership in your work, and loving what you do. What I look for in success is most importantly happiness. An indication of that would be reaching the point of my career where I have secured generational wealth. Success is knowing and accepting that one day your presence may not be physical, but your legacy can live on forever. And that is the success I am trying to define.
