Today we’d like to introduce you to Asia Feliciano, Nicholette Fortune, and Melissa Mondesir.
Asia, Nicholette, and Melissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Our story began from three personal journeys leading to one point, Always On Media.
One story spawns from a dreamer, our Head of Video Ops, who wished to make thought-provoking and visually stimulating content while promoting other talented creators. Another story from our Director of PR & Marketing, who had a tough time finding women who looked like her in day jobs, but vows to make women of color a priority in projects she produces. And the third story comes from our Creative Director, who is a natural born artist with a contrasting background in cyber security & criminal justice.
What brought us together was our individual talents, and a desire to create original content that showcases the authentic experiences of millennials like us.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When you start something new, there are bound to be roadblocks, but it’s in these roadblocks that growth happens. As a new company, there were things that we had to learn about each other, how we worked as a team and what changes needed to be made to run efficiently.
A perfect example of this would be funding. Video is the main component we use to tell our stories, but it also a costly one. Props, equipment and crew members are needed to pull it together but when there are hiccups, we have learned to rely on each other’s strengths and get creative with our problem-solving.
Always On Media – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
AOM provides a platform for the next creative hustlers and business people of color to witness their own success. We do this by crafting original content that can cater to the interests of many different audiences. For instance, we have a live web series for literature lovers who love to get lit, a dynamic poetry series for those who like to get deep, an authentic podcast for audiophiles who love to contemplate social issues, and much more.
We also collaborate with local businesses and brands to create content and events that uphold our values. We are unique because we share the collective goal of promoting entrepreneurial success with diverse storytelling as a core principle, rather than an afterthought.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
One of our proudest moments would definitely be when we produced a music video for our web poetry series: Disruptive Psyche. The production for “My Dear Beloved” was a fun, collaborative effort that pushed us to our limits but proved to be so rewarding. We sourced a full crew, shot in several set locations, and utilized various equipment and props to pull it all together. The feedback we received on the video was also overwhelmingly positive, easily making it one of our favorite projects to date.
