Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashlyn Mills-Parker.
Ashlyn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The need to radiate self-love is how I got started. I was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama where you’ll find amazing history and food, but an extensive amount of racial discrimination, substance abuse, substandard education, poor mental health, and increased homicide rates. Luckily, my loving family was the compass that guided me through the storm. Collectively, they taught me that self-love was the one thing no one could ever take from me. So I started by leaving Birmingham, enlisting in the military to establish discipline, and attempting to express my self-love through modeling.
Modeling helped me find it and while remaining humble, I quickly learned that I was capable of amazing things! During times of doubt, I remembered that the struggle you’re in today is developing the strength you need for tomorrow. Once I worked on being in love with the person in the mirror that has been through so much but is still standing, I slowly started to succeed in all aspects of life. Today, my greatest responsibility is loving myself and knowing I am enough.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing in life is easy. My biggest struggle was finding the strength to overcome weakness. During times when I couldn’t see my way through the fog of uncertainty, I trusted my infallible GOD to lead me safely to my destiny; and that he did!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I specialize in Fashion/Editorial, Lingerie/Swimwear, Fitness, Commercial, Land Mag, Petite, Promotional, and Glamour Modeling. What makes me proud is the course of action I enabled in support of not allowing others the permission to define me. When my portraits are viewed, behind the photographer’s revisions, I want the audience to see me, raw, exactly for who I am. No one is me and that’s the superpower that sets me apart from others.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I can honestly say, I was blessed with a solid support team. GOD, my beautiful wife, family, best friends, and collaborating photographers deserve all the credit there is to give. GOD himself fought my battles, arranged things in my favor, and made away even when I didn’t see away. My amazingly loving and caring wife has supported me through every aspect of achieving my dreams, no matter what the circumstances were, and adjusted my crown when it started to tilt.
Auntie Janice was the superstar role model mom I needed, while Uncle Ralph accentuated that GOD had a plan for me that I needed to trust, live by, and enjoy. The rest of my family went on to teach me that I was born to be real, not to be perfect. My best friends were there to remind me to be me, do me, and love me for me while my collaborating photographers assisted me in building my portfolio. I express my gratitude and highly appreciate each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart!
